2 to 5 years seems awfully light. This wasn't involuntary manslaughter, it was murder. Involuntary manslaughter would be accidentally backing over the victim if they ran behind the van or the like. Leaving them in the van for so long so they could text their boyfriend when the should be working is something completely different.

It might not rise to the death penalty, but certainly more than 2 to 5 years. Maybe they could lock her in a cell with her boyfriend for that time. It should be an interesting psychological experiment to see if they remained so chummy if they spent 23 of 24 hours locked in a little cell together for 5 years.

And turn up the heat — oh, not very much or very fast, compared with what the victim suffered: just some precise, medically monitored fraction of a degree per day, timing it so that they cook to death on the last day of their prison sentence, just as the warden is arriving to let them out.
