That sounds like fun. My daughter has a similar thing that Barbie does. You just plug it into your TV and Barbie comes on the screen and starts you off with dance steps and you step on the pad and move with her. She loves it! LOL

Apparently you can now buy this to plug directly into your TV, no PlayStation or like system needed to play. ( http://www.ddrgaming.com/dadarepadfor.html )I found a similar program to DDR called StepMania ( http://www.stepmania.com )I've downloaded StepMania, and I've ordered a /dual/ set of the DDR Dance Pads and a USB converter - so I should soon be doing the hottest dance craze around. There have been stories in some of the local newspapers about how some of the schools are using the Dance Dance Revolution in their Phy Ed classes to get kids up & moving. Ann, I have heard of this. There was some news show awhile back..I don't remember if it was 20/20 or which one but they was talking about it and they said it was a new weight loss craze. Said people was shedding pounds like crazy using it. I couldnt remember what game system it was for but they showed them using it. They put a mat on the floor and on the tv screen it would show you what you was suppose to step on and it got faster as you went along and then rated how good you was. It said people wasnt using it to lose weight but was just playing it because it was fun. The weight loss just happened. I would love to find one of those. We dont even have a Nintendo Gamecube. We have a old atari, a sega, a nintendo, a playstation and a playstation2. And I don't think they make anything like that for any of them that I know of. But girl, if your kids has got one of those challenge them and use that thing! From what I seen of t, it was great! I didnt know the name of it but I'm pretty sure from the way you described it we are talking about the same thing. I'd give my left arm for one. But as always my budget don't allow for the fun things in life:(

Hi Ann -- It is good to "see" you back! I've missed you! I seem to remember seeing pictures of you when you first tried to go rollerblading with your kids. Ack! I told my sister I was going to try it and her first question was

" what kind of bra do you have? " :) I'm liable to blacken both my eyes. :)

I'll try to just tap on the arrows to keep it low impact. It would be fun

to eventually work up to doing it fast like teenagers though.

Gotta go to Blockbuster before I pick up the kids. I've heard that 40 year

old Virgin is hysterical so dh and I will watch that tomorrow night.

Tonight we'll have family movie night with Napoleon Dynamite. Isn't that

the name of the Vote for Pedro movie? I've heard it's good too.

Thanks for the kind welcome back. I've missed you guys too. The message

volume after New Years was totally overwhelming and I didn't have it in me

to jump back into the fray.

The Barbie one comes all by itself and you don't need a gaming system to use it just hook it up to the TV, Molly got it for Christmas a few years ago don't know if they still make it or not.

Just call me dancing queen! I made it through several levels of DDR.

My kids were soooo impressed because I smoked their scores. :) It was fun

and great exercise. I'll do some more today. I'm doing the easy level

which I can do pretty low impact just tapping the arrows with my feet. I

did have to do one double where you have to jump up and land with your left

foot on the left arrow and your right foot on the right arrow at the same

time. That was fine once or twice but would be too high impact to do over

and over at this weight. Now I want to go to Amazon and see what other DDRs

are available. :) That is darn cute though. :)

I didn't walk on the treadmill but I did clean it off and vacuum the dust

off so it is ready to go. Hey, it might not sound like much but I haven't

even gotten that far in months! :) It's after noon and dh is still in bed.

When he gets up I'll take over the bedroom for 30 min. to walk on the

treadmill.

The weather has turned cold and wet so we'll spend the weekend inside

working around the house and watching movies. Last night we saw Napoleon

Dynamite which was terrible. The kids only lasted 5 minutes. It had been

highly recommended for kids but that friend's kids must be very different

from mine! Dh liked it.

Tonight my mom will babysit while and I go out to celebrate our 13th

anniversary. We're going to Pappadeux which was our special occasion place

before we had kids. 's boss gave him a $100 Pappa's gift card for

coming to work when I was in the hospital. Odd. After dinner we'll do a

little shopping for Vonn's 5th birthday. After we get home and send my mom

on her way we'll watch 40 year old Virgin. We'll watch Wedding Crashers

tomorrow night since has off on Monday. I like movies but we rarely

take the time to rent them and watch them with our busy schedules.

Still ramblin, still haven't eaten breakfast! I'm enjoying a Diet Pepsi

which will be off limits after surgery like all carbonated beverages. That

will be hard since Diet Pepsi is my last vice.

Sandy, please tell us about it soon! Dance Dance Revolution seems to be

turning into a craze around here and my older son has shown a vague

interest in it (he has two siblings that did it at a group activity and just

couldn't stop talking about it). I couldn't believe my " cool " NT 12 year

old boy even did it in front of people... he loved it.

There is now a Dance Dance Revolution out for Nintendo Gamecube. I

read reviews of it and they are OK but complain that the version is

too easy. That would be a plus for my son, because his coordination needs a

lot of help. He likes a lot, so it might get him inspired. We have a

hard time even getting him to go outside to play... he hates it. I wish we

could find something to get him excited about physical activity. He does

love to swim, but with 5 kids (4 would sink if they fell in) it's really

hard to do. We do swimming lessons in the summer though.

Anyway, just interested in your DDR experience.

I also want to thank you SO MUCH for creating this group. It has been a

lifeline for me for the last 4 years.

Ok! Here goes .....

Some of J.s deficits early on lay with motor skills, and once he started

to improve and was trying his darndest to emulate his peers, he still

remained very " visual " . Therefore, at PE, when the other kids could

" feel " the rhythm for things like jumping jacks, J. tried to follow

visually -- leaving him always a 1/2 beat behind everyone else!

At the same time I had been investigating " interactive metronome " - a

therapy that involved helping teach our kids a sense of rhythm and

timing, with assertion that better motor planning would carry over into

all kinds of other areas. But it was new, expensive, and seemed to be

presented as " work. " DDR would encourage rhythm, could be offered as

play - as a reinforcer, even, and didn't cost $$ for every session!

J. played a LOT of DDR and became really good at it. There were a

couple of payoffs - he was developing a sense of rhythm, it was

something his peers thought was cool, so we had an increase in visits by

his friends, and he was good at it, making him look " cool " to peers,

too. He also became more fit and dropped a couple of his extra pounds

over that summer. :) No one would ever describe J. as having a poor

sense of rhythm now (he even ended up " on camera " at one of the Seaworld

nighttime Shamu shows, where they zoom in on kids dancing in the

audience during the pre-show warmup), and some of those DDR moves are

positively terrifying! Oh, and we've worn out more than a couple dancepads.

I highly recommend " DDR Therapy " for sense of timing and gross motor

work! Not to mention a good excuse to invite a few other kids over to

participate in the fun. If the " standard " DDR is too challenging to

begin with, there are some Disney themed ones that are easier (designed

for younger kids) and would be a good starting point.

Sandy,

I agree with your comment reflecting the importance of PT. I didn't think

much about it early on because I think as parents we think of the language and

social issues first, which are so obvious.

My son is 11 now and receiving speech, OT and PT at a local hospital. When

they tested him for PT it was really interesting to see what he had

difficulty with. Bilateral coordination was particularly tough. More evidence

that

this is truly a medical problem that effects their whole bodies.

On the upside, he LOVES therapy. I get a lot of " Are you ready mom? I'm

off to OT! " ...lol. And I can hear him giggling back there from all the way in

the waiting room. Thank God for playful therapists :-).

We got the DDR and it is great! Don't worry about it being

too easy - there are 4 or 5 levels you can work up to. It is

perfect for younger children or those with motor planning deficits

(like my son.) My son also doesn't like to be outside, doesn't like

sports or other physical activities, and has always had low muscle

tone. But he will work incredibly hard at DDR! He even works

up a sweat - he has red cheeks and wet hair when he finishes!

Timary,

Thanks for the info! I looked it up on Amazon and it seems expensive but

not when you compare it to the cost of PT that insurance doesn't cover.

I just wanted to add, that DDR is wonderful but please don't consider it

a complete replacement for PT.

Thanks for this tip. I'm hesitant to get my

(youngest) son another video game - we made a huge

mistake introducing him to Super Sunshine

(thanks hubby), and he got very obsessed... wouldn't

think about anything else. It absorbed his whole

imagination, and even though he is only allowed to

play it for an hour (or so) on Saturday evenings now,

he thinks about it day and night. At least he has

finally stopped begging. I think that is OCD

manifesting. But if there is an option that also

engages him in physical activity to help me wean him

from the imaginary world, I might be interested. He

has a birthday coming up in May.

I've been told that the Nintendo GameCube-compatible version is not

available anymore. Has this changed? I've been looking for it forever!

We have the same problem with obsessing with video games. But we

let him do the DDR as much as he wants - it is physically demanding

even at the easiest level (try it yourself and you'll see) plus

there is a lot of other learning going on. Here are a few things

that I can think of:

* works on attention and focus - he has to pay close attention to

what " step " is coming up next

* works on hyperactivity - he has to stay in the same place; if you

move around much you can't hit your " marks "

* works on motor planning - he has to figure out which foot to use

where or whether to use both feet at once

* works on balance

* works on rhythm and timing - you have to hit the mark at

the " exact " time to get full credit. (I think this is where it is

most like Interactive Metronome, which we did a few years ago. My

son thought it was very boring and towards the end he had to be

dragged there.)

He doesn't really " obsess " about this one like the others, either.

It's fun and he enjoys it but he is not constantly talking about the

story line (there is one, actually.) Maybe it's because he

eventually gets physically worn out and HE chooses to put it down...

fwiw,
