Guest guest
They know they have the US over a barrel. If they sell off our debt they would hurt the dollar, not to mention crashing the government which is addicted to debt. Since they control so much of our manufacturing, a trend that will only continue to grow thanks to current and likely future policies in the US, if they cut us off that would hurt too. On the other hand, cutting off trade could leave 100 million people unemployed in China. We could just go back to the Constitution and practice commerce raiding and interdiction. Hitting China's merchant fleet would be a viable option, though the lawyers would have an absolute fit. But then people might figure out that the guts of many high tech items are made in the US but shipped to China for final assembly. Bringing back that final step to the US would be a real boon to the economy. Anyway, it might be worth it to allow China to go to war in the region. If they invaded Vietnam or attacked Taiwan, that should stand against them in world opinion. Then again, the way China has bought so many Third World nations, maybe not. " One way to play it would be to say that we've spent so much money and so many resources defending so many countries for the past hundred years ago that we are too broke to defend the world against a 100 million man army, and let the world get swept by a tidal wave of Chinese. It would make the world spend themselves into the poorhouse while defneding themselves so that everyone would be on the same economic footing, and China would lose a good chunk of their army in the fighting. But that isn't the humanitarian way to do things, so it won't happen. But what's interesting is that you don't see the rest of the world chiding China for their temper tantrums over some insignificant atolls. Just us and a few others. Yes, you can access oil from those atolls, but you can access them from elsewhere too. These days you can drill sideways, and in circles, and what have you, and you can sponge up oil from great distances. Or China could stop being stingy and actually buy the rights to float a rig where they want to drill. Really, the reason China is doing this is because they have discovered the wonderful advantage to wealth: Unsustainable conspicious consumption. It would be better for them to develop some kind of neo-communism where everyone gets their share -a greater share than before- but not so much that they roll around in wealth either. If the Chinese have their way, the rest of the world will get poorer, and I must say we probably deserve it, because we have been consuming at unsustainable levels for too long now anyway.
