Guest guest
I think a lot of people are taking this far too lightly or even supporting it out of some misguided ideals about democracy. What's happening now isn't democracy and I don't think it was a spontaneous revolt. I think there was some planning behind this by those who want to take power in Egypt themselves. They have simply taken advantage of the people's anger at their poverty and the corruption of Mubarak, using the Tunisian uprising as a spark. The powerplays behind the scenes aren't getting much play and what coverage they are getting seems to show a lack of understanding on the part of the reporters. I've seen the Muslim Brotherhood written about like it was some kind of pro-democracy movement that is grand and benevolent, completely ignoring the group's ties to terrorism and other terrorist groups or that they want to impose strict Sharia throughout the Middle East and beyond. This is a situation to take most seriously. Also if brings up something that has been galling me for some time. I'm sick or hearing idiots throwing around the word "democracy" like it is a holy icon. Yes, that includes Bush back in the day, but it also includes all dolts in congress who refer to the US as a democracy. It isn't. The US is a Republic. It was made a Republic and NOT a democracy on purpose because the Founders knew history. They knew that democracies were places of mob rule where terrible things could be voted in place by whim and charismatic dictators could seize power quite easily. That's my opinion of democracy as well: mob rule and barely a step up from anarchy. Of course, it is also only a transitory state since, like anarchy, it isn't stable and will collapse, usually into dictatorship. Of course, I also think the US has become a democracy once the government started redistributing wealth with the welfare programs thus allowing some to vote for a living. Listen to the politicians and see how they behave when the subject of entitlements and Social Security come up and see if you still think this isn't so. In a message dated 2/1/2011 12:46:57 A.M.
