US says it's past time for UN action on Syria

U.S. Ambassador Rice says it's past time for the U.N. Security Council to

speak with one voice and condemn atrocities and abuses taking place inside

Syria.

A European-drafted resolution backed by the U.S. condemns Syria for its deadly

crackdown on protesters. But the resolution has been languishing because it is

opposed by Russia and China, which have veto-power.

Rice told reporters Thursday it's also past time for a credible political reform

process to get underway in Syria.

She said the U.S. is drafting a resolution to extend the U.N. peacekeeping force

monitoring the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights

which will take account of recent incidents when protesters crossed the border

from Syria.

Again the US had better watch out about appealing to the UN. The US is losing strength and allies around the world and in the UN. They are starting to line up with China. Some UN agencies already want to hammer the US for many things and the more we appeal to the UN to hit countries we are angry with, the more it will give legitimacy for when China or another competitor wants to have a go at us.
