Guest guest
Very good article. The issue of world food supplies is vastly underreported. Much of this crisis isn't being brought on by the droughts in the US and elsewhere, but in part due to the US use of corn and other grain to make ethanol. We are taking about one third or more of the corn crop and running it through a highly inefficient process to make ethanol that has less energy value that gasoline. It is only going to get worse because the corn/ethanol lobby has gotten the government to raise to 15% the amount of ethanol mixed into gasoline. The auto industry has said that at that rate, most car engines will sustain damage. That means lots of older cars out there, things people are wanting to hang on to in these economic times, are going to be ruined from the inside out for the greed of a few corporations, megafarmers and the ethanol industry. In the mean time, the world's population could be fed on what we are dumping into our gas tanks. Granted human population is excessive in certain areas, by which I mean places where population has outstripped the land's ability to feed the local population, but that is offset by the amount of food produced in countries like the US. This is an economic gain for us. Still, the inevitable major droughts will come and eventually the fertilizers will become less effective or vanish and the denuded soils won't be able to grow nearly so much. Genetically engineered crops will only take us so far in solving that. In a message dated 1/30/2011 2:12:42 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, no_reply writes: You can expect prices at the pump to go up.
