Gbagbo's rule ends but Ivory Coast's future uncertain

ELEANOR HALL: The internationally recognised president of Ivory Coast, Alassane

Ouattara, says his country is entering a new era of peace and hope.

The president was speaking after his rival t Gbagbo was captured in a

dramatic assault on his residence in the capital Abidjan.

I'm curious to see what happens to him. The stories about what happened there are uncertain. Some say French forces assaulted Gbagbo's compound while others say UN forces did, though it is possible the French were operating under UN command. Most likely it was the Foreign Legion since they were in the Ivory Coast a few years back when French forces fired on a crowd of rioters. The country has had a long history of violence and unrest and that's not likely to change any time soon.
