Swazi police beat people to stop protest

MANZINI: Police in Swaziland fired water cannons and tear gas, beat people with

batons and arrested activists to prevent pro-democracy protests Tuesday in

sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarchy, Simantele Mmema, spokeswoman for

the Swaziland National Association of Teachers, said Tuesday. In recent weeks,

an online campaign has tried to rally support for Tuesday's protests, which come

exactly 38 years after the current Swazi king's father, King Sobhuza II, banned

political parties.

Hosni Mubarak hospitalised: Report

CAIRO: Hosni Mubarak, the deposed Egyptian president, has been hospitalised at

the Red Sea port of Sharm el-Shaikh, Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday. Meanwhile,

soldiers moved into Cairo's main Tahrir Square Tuesday to end a five-day sit-in

by protesters demanding civilian rule and swifter prosecution of Egypt's former

president and his allies. Troops with machineguns rounded up several young men

and pushed them into vans.
