Flu epidemic reported in Russia

Published: Jan. 29, 2011 at 2:18 PM

MOSCOW, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- A flu epidemic has sickened at least 90,000 people in

Moscow, Russian health officials say.

Leonid Pechatnikov, director of the city health department, said Friday that

Moscow is prepared with adequate pharmaceutical supplies and enough hospital

beds, RIA Novosti reported. He said only 93 people have been diagnosed with the

H1N1 strain of the virus in the capital, and there have been no deaths, although

some have been reported elsewhere in the country.

Most of the 90,000 diagnosed with flu this week have the seasonal form of the

disease, he said.

Quarantines have been imposed on hundreds of schools in Russia because of the

flu outbreak. Pechatnikov said he expects the numbers to drop in February.
