Guest guest
Donna, My 4 y.o. son, too, got a bit hyper on Zoloft and had trouble sleeping. I gave him Benadryl ~1 hour before bedtime (with Dr. G's knowledge) and that helped a lot. We recently switched to Paxil, and I have a bright, happy alert kid who IS SLEEPING! He even put himself down for a nap two days in a row. Kristy Zoloft and sleeplessness Hi all, Do sleep problems that occur when starting a new SSRI something that passes? Dr. G is having us try several different SSRI's over a short period of time to determine the best one for my son. The latest is zoloft, for the last ten days. Since starting it, the kid is very, very hyper at night and can't settle down. He literally can't stop moving; he rolls around in bed, kicks his legs in the air, does somersaults, and just generally flops around. Last night he was awake until 2:30 a.m.! The Zoloft is the only thing that has changed in recent weeks. We are supposed to ride this out until Thursday, but school starts on August 14 (yes, I know, ridiculously early), and I'm worried he won't be ready. TIA, Donna
Guest guest
Hmmmm...thanks, Kristy. We're still in the " adjustment " stages. At least I hope so! He was doing quite well on Celexa, except for severe social anxiety issues. Dr. G said this could (and should!) be addressed with a different SSRI, so we've now tried Paxil (no good) and now Zoloft. Right now he's also pretty spacy and OCD, which I've come to expect while changing SSRI's, but the hyper-ness and sleeplessness is new. I asked Dr. G last week if I could give him some Benedryl, and Dr. G said, yes, but only for a night or two. I guess it's different for different kids. So Benedryl isn't a long-term solution for us. Thanks for your input, though! Donna > > Donna, > > My 4 y.o. son, too, got a bit hyper on Zoloft and had trouble sleeping. Guest guest
melatonin is affected by serontonin .. you should see a settling after 10 days. Now, that being done and said, we're seeing similar issues with a change from paxil to celexa. Some researchers have suggested that children need to be given an 'upper' (of some type) in order for their brain to relax. We're trying a variety of things to include music, heavy pillows (weight-sensory) and aromatherapy (jasmine in water). we find that heavy exercise during the day helps :-) doris land > > Hi all, > > Do sleep problems that occur when starting a new SSRI something that > passes? Guest guest
Thanks for those suggestions. He certainly needs lots of sensory input when he's flopping around like a Mexican Jumping Bean!! Good also to know that it should pass. Donna > > > > Hi all, > > > > Do sleep problems that occur when starting a new SSRI something that > > passes? Guest guest
ditto the bit about exercise. my son was a total couch potato, but since adding the SSRI, he's come ALIVE!! we find he sleeps quickly & soundly after a long walk, swim, play at the park, etc... good luck!! shannon. > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > Do sleep problems that occur when starting a new SSRI something that > > > passes? Guest guest
Donna This is EXATLY what happened to my son. Guest guest
Hi , What do you mean you " switched off " right away? Do you mean you switched to another SSRI? > > > > Hi all, > > > > Do sleep problems that occur when starting a new SSRI something > that > > passes? Guest guest
Hi Donna, After reading some of the other posts I'm surprised Dr G switched us back so quick. But I looked at my notes and my son was on Zoloft just 3 days. He was hyper and an insomniac immediately and Dr G switched him back to Prozac....the SSRI he was on before trying Zoloft. > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > Do sleep problems that occur when starting a new SSRI something > > that > > > passes? Guest guest
Hi , I talked to Dr. Goldberg's office this morning. He's off Zoloft as of today, and we're moving on to Prozac. Sigh...I hate this rapid switching of SSRI's, but I do understand the reason. Thanks again, Donna > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > > > > > Do sleep problems that occur when starting a new SSRI > something > > > that > > > > passes? Guest guest
, Why was he switched from the Prozac to Zoloft in the first place? Kristy Re: Zoloft and sleeplessness Hi Donna, After reading some of the other posts I'm surprised Dr G switched us back so quick. But I looked at my notes and my son was on Zoloft just 3 days. Guest guest
Hi Kristy, I honestly do not remember why he was switched from Prozac to Zoloft....it was last year and I do not remember all of the circumstances. In general, I think Dr G is " looking for " certain things in his patients.....and he gets all of this info from us the parents since we work with him via phone consult. I describe to him my son's deficits and based on what he hears I believe he analyzes medicine adjustments, especially SSRI adjustments. Perfect example....my son was on 3/4 Prozac at the beginning of the summer. We increased it to 7/8 after school was out. We saw nothing but positive things. We then increased to 1 whole tablet....again nothing but positive things! We then added an extra 1/4 every other day. my son became dull and spacey during th e day and hyper in the afternoon and night. So we did a complete switch to Paxil a week ago. Dr G told me to use the 1 tablet of Prozac a day as my gold standard to see if he is as good or better than this. Our goal is to get the optimim SSRI and dose for him before school starts. P.S. My son just walked up to me and asked what I was doing. I told him I was typing a message. He asked to who. I told him one of Dr Goldberg's patients. He said...who....Kristy? (he obviously read the top of the message). I said yes. He said...what's her last name? I guess the Paxil is working better than I thought! > > > > > > Donna > > > This is EXATLY what happened to my son.
