Guest guest
Okay two things strange happened today...of course after I said nothing was going on. The first was that my son touched his head a few times this morning and started crying like in pain. During our morning session he did this again.Crying like in pain..NOT avoiding work or anything just looked like in pain. He had a very firm constipated looking stool in the AM as well before our session in the AM. I am thinking constipation and possibly headache from Valtrex?? Today we had upped the dose in the AM (from 1/4 tab three times a day to 3/4 tab am, 1/2 tab midday, 3/4 tab pm). Today is day eight of Valtrex. We have no anti fungal on board (per Dr G instructions). We also started iron 1 teaspoon a day in liquid form. My son has always shown pretty low on his iron count. Is this die off perhaps? Guest guest
Hi Kristie, Dr. G told us specifically that a headache is one of the most common symptoms of antiviral die-off, and to give our son Tylenol if he seemed cranky and out of sorts. Die-off from antiviral lasts about 2 weeks. So yes, the does sound like die-off -- which means the Valtrex is hitting something; a very good sign! As for the stool -- my son always gets diarrhea during die-off rather than constipation. My guess would be that the constipation is from the iron suppliment. That should get better over time as your son starts to better absorb nutrients. Dr. G told me to give mineral oil for constipation, but (of course), he gags on it. So I give him a little diluted pear juice instead. That usually does the trick. Guest guest
My daughter started Valtrex on Aug. 12th and she has been a fuss butt for the past few days. She out with rash like bumps that are raised up and now she is constipated and GRUMPY!!!! The bump that she has from this die off seem to itch her as she is acting like a horse rubbing on anything that she can rub on to itch them. I gave her generic benydril for the itching but WOW did that make her get wild... with in minutes of taking the meds she began shrugging her shoulders and bobbing her head while tapping with her fingers. I am glad that that was short lived as she was making me climb the walls with all her nervous activities. I have been giving her Motrin ever since and is does seem to help. I hoped that it would take some of the inflammation out of the bumps and it seems to work. Guest guest
Sheri, Benadryl makes a dye-free form... you may have used that but I just wanted to make sure you knew in case you need it again for some reason. Of course, even if you use the dye-free there can be bothersome ingredients in it. Guest guest
Hi! We are going to start valtrex at the end of the month and I am really stressing out about getting the meds into my son! I will try adding it to his juice first, but if he tastes it at all, he won't drink it. The only soft food he eats is peanut butter, so I thought about mixing it into that, but he won't eat pb sandwiches 3 times a day! Do you understand why it is important to take the medicine 3 times a day instead of the whole dose at one time? I understand that the valtrex is very bitter, so any tips would be VERY appreciated!!! Thanks,
Guest guest
Try mixing it in a tespoon of peanut butter or apple sauce and let him eat it from the spoon. Re: Die off Perhaps? Hi! Guest guest
You could try an Aveeno oatmeal bath/creme, or dye-free Benadryl, or Benadryl cream. Kristy Re: Die off Perhaps? Guest guest
I cut my son's pill in half & then put it in a cookie bite. He is happy to eat a cookie 3 times a day! I tried it in a muffin once & it did NOT work... so, try something your child likes as long as it has a strong flavor. Good luck! --- Seattlejg@... wrote: > Hi! Guest guest
, Do you think he might swallow a small pill? When my son first started on Valtrex, he was 3 y.o. I washed off the blue coating, then carefully measured 1 tsp. of bottled water and dissolved the Valtrex in the water overnight, then gave him 1/4 teaspoon of the mixture with a syringe, 3 times/day. It tastes terrible, so I don't think I would ever try to disguise it in food/drink, but maybe give a chocolate chip or some juice afterwards if really necessary. Now, my son is 4 and used to swallowing pills. To get him used to swallowing the pills, I demonstrated on me, then laid him back in my arms and put the pill on the back of his tongue, then washed it down with a syringe of juice, and said, " swallow " so he would know what it was I was asking him to do. He struggled a bit the first 2-3 times, but then he 'got it' and swallows pills like a champ now. I still use the water/syringe method for some meds (he gets 1/8 of a tablet of one, so the water/syringe is better than trying to cut a pill into 8ths). Kristy Re: Die off Perhaps? Hi! Guest guest
, This is how I got my son to take meds. I would mix the crushed medicine in Mocha Mix non-dairy ice cream or sorbet and put it on a teaspoon. (The Mocha Mix Ice Cream is in with the other ice creams at stores here.) Then I would give it to my son and follow it with a water chaser. Frozen foods tend to make your taste buds not as sensitive. When he was older this is how I taught him to take pills. I would cut the pills into small pieces and surround them in the ice cream and put them on a spoon. Once again follow it with a water chaser. Eventually when he was ready, we eliminated the ice cream. Hope this helps! Marcia Hinds - E-Mail hindssite@... ( Phone 805 497-8202
Guest guest
I'm with you on the 3 times a day thing. We asked about this and were told 3 x a day is important because the med stays in the body a short time, and therefore 3x per day to keep the med in the body as long as possible. > > Hi!
