You might consider having her seen by a pediatric

gastroenterologist to determine whether she has

abnormal bacterial overgrowth in her stools. The

cyclicity could reflect how long it takes for such

overgrowth to occur and then a flare up would be seen.

Usually they can be treated with antibiotics.

It is also possible your daughter has a recurring

streptococcal infection. Some of the symptoms you

describe are similar to those seen in PANDAS. The

term PANDAS is generally used to describe a subgroup

of children who have either a tic disorder (such as

Tourette's Syndrome) or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

and whose tics, obsessions, and/or compulsions

typically worsen dramatically following streptococcal

infections or children who have no prior history or

tics, obsessions, and compulsions but who suddenly

" explode " in symptoms following a streptococcal

infection. What parents refer to as " strep throat " is

one form of streptococcal infection. In some cases,

parents may be aware that their child had a strep

throat in the recent past, but in other cases, the

child may have (or have had) a strep infection without

it being detected.

You need to work closely with a pediatric immunologist

and gastroenterologist to track down your daughter's

problem.

Sounds very unsettling. Good luck in finding a

solutions.

Nuha,

Chiari is evidently missed or even IGNORED sometimes when a Dr. is reading

an MRI, so you will want to really stress that you want it checked for.

Some people have a mild form and function normally, so believe it or not it

is sometimes not mentioned to the patient as an abnormal finding on a MRI.

Thanks everyone... i spoke to the neurologist that is heading this study at NIH

and who will be reading the MRI's and EEG's and she said she will be looking for

that too : )

I spoke to her at length about my daughter's " Manic " cycles that i mentioned

in my email and she said that she will look at all records and when we finish

testing we can address that by looking at possible causes

but did with the mri? I get nervous when I hear there

can be mild forms of it. Perhaps that could be a

reason for hypo and hyperperfusion of the brain? Barb

Hi Barb,

Not sure if a neurospect would show a Chiari Malformation . I do know that

an MRI is the way it's diagnosed and my son has had a dozen over the past

two years. The only other imagimg studies that he has had were a 3-D Cat

Scan and regular CT.

  • 2 weeks later...

It is strange all this talk of strep throat - my son was OK in life health wise till he had this and then had convulsions, fevers galore, loads of convulsions, repeated infections - ears being the most common, notice of delay, no commuincation ect, diagnosis of autism and so on and so on, but it all started with the strep throat. I didn't actually realise it can be very dangerous - my sons turned to septeacemia and then they were scared at the hospital it could spread the the menegicocal tissues and cause the deadly menegicocal septeacemia. Fortunateley it did not but still had to have a week of 4 x daily intavenous anti biotics for him. It can be bad news
