Guest guest
My autistic guy, now 14, has suffered from seasonal allergies for 7 years. My wife as well. We live in Texas and for those so predisposed, there are terrible seasonal allergies. They zone him out, make him irritable, and aggressive, and exacerbate autistic behaviors. My wife would be totally knocked down for weeks - miserable. We've tried all the allopathic medicines available and each did not work. We have even removed all carpets and got good filters on AC. Now I know " alternative medicine " is not popular on this list but I am just conveying what is true for my family. We went to Patti Weisler here in San who is trained as both an RN and a Chinese herbalist. Since going to her a few times my family is close to allergy free for 2 years. Sometimes a hint of a reaction will crop up and we know to start taking preventive doses. If they even do occur the reactions are about 95% less then before. I am a researcher at the University of Texas. Do I know how the Chinese herbs work? No. Did the allergies stop? Yes. Do I know how the allopathic meds work? Yes. Did they work? No. With the allergy symptoms gone, my son is much much happier and can concentrate on his lessons at school, his ABA and piano. I know its not for everyone, but this is our simple story. Ray RE: allergies!! Hi all, My little boy has been suffering with allergies for the past month or so and they're getting worse by the day. He's currently on Zyrtec but this makes him really grouchy and it doesn't seem to help with his itchy nose and eyes. The ENT gave him a Rx. today to try Nasonex and told me to stop the Zyrtec ?? I'm hesitant to use a steriod nasal spray due to the immune system problems. I'm wondering what has worked for your children and if anyone has used Allegra successfully ? Guest guest
Hi - Dr Goldberg used Nasonex on both of my boys, and they seemed to do well on it. The steroid nasal sprays are different than the oral meds. In this case, addressing the local inflammation directly helps prevent infection whereas other forms of steroid put kids at higher risk. Of course, I don't remember being asked to stop the Zyrtec initially, but at the time I didn't realize it was causing my sons' irritability (I sure was slow to catch onto that one). He used both an oral allergy med (tried a few) in addition to the nasal spray. We're now using Dytan and having decent results out of that (from another doc, so I don't know Dr G's opinion on that one). I've also heard of Dr G using Allegra as well, if I'm not mistaken. Response varies per child. But I wouldn't be afraid of the Nasonex personally, as it can be very helpful. Guest guest
My son was on Zyrtec and it did nothing for him. We switched to Singulair and it does great. I would also agree with Ray that if you can find a good naturopath, it could be well worth it. Cheryl Lowrance (c.lowrance@...) Guest guest
We had our son's allergies checked at UCLA by Dr , Prof Clinical Immunology and Allergies on referral from Dr G. He prescribed Rhincort, continue Zyrtec and could also use NasalCrom as needed. Dr G concurred with this choice. If very sniffy then something one of the regular allergy/decongestants helps. We use Demazin syrup (Australia) its Chlorphenramine and Phenylephrine in a colorless non-allergic syrup - but again Dr G and Dr agreed. Our local GP here Dr Tan said that Flixonase (Flonase - US) is slightly better than Rhinocort as it has smaller molecules - again Dr G says this is a good choice also. We were concerned about nasal steroids, however have been assured by three Dr's that these are safe, _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of LINDA ANAGNOSTAKOS Sent: Tuesday, September 26, 2006 3:37 AM Subject: RE: allergies!! Guest guest
Nasal Chrom is sodium cromolyn - a nasal mast cell stabilizer - it helps prevent mast cells in the nose from reacting to allergens. It is not an antihistamine, not a corticosteroid nor a decongestant. It is safe to use with other allergy medicines like antihistamines, corticosteroids and decongestants. We seem to have been able to reduce our son's morning stuffiness using Nasalcrom 2-3x per day plus Rhincort in the evenings. Guest guest
Not many seasons in Singapore - hot and tropical the whole time - though there is a drier and wetter season..for what its worth. Generally they should be used seasonally - not sure if they lose effectiveness - we give them a rest for a while and see how he does, then if symptoms begin to appear then reindroduce. Hope this has helped, _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of meljackmom Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 8:25 PM Subject: Re: allergies!! Thanks for the info . Guest guest
Hi , We just had our monthly visit with Dr. G yesterday. He said to keep on Astelin or Nasalchrome on a long-term basis, Nasacort during allergy season and continue when he starts to get stuffy. The only break he sometimes gets from allergies is during the summer break, but once school starts in September he gets really bad. Argie Re: allergies!! Thanks for the info .
