Guest guest
I'm not giving up on diet, I'm just going about it differently. I'm making changes that need to be made and I'm incorporating more ABA. We're basically doing the same thing you did. I just don't see any reason to torture my child any longer. His diet may not have been great before but he was much healthier and to take a huge step backward just wasn't making any sense so I'm doing it through lots and lots of behavioral interventions. Luckily my son isn't addicted to gluten and all his other IgG intolerances. He'll accept any replacement that's tasty enough and looks like it's supposed to look so we don't have any problems there. I'd rather have a happy, healthy and progressing son than not so starving him out is not the best choice for us.He's slowly getting back to his old self.CherylI don't think it's time to say that diet will or won't work for a child. Even a child who wouldn't eat for 5 days etc.....Maybe another thing to consider is a different approach. For the record my son "starved" himself 14 days. I had to syringe liquids into him. I understand how serious this gets. I DO NOT agree that they will eat when hungry. These aren't healthy kids and we can't use the old methods our parents and grandparents used. I regret following in the beginning the advice of my pediatrician while my son starved himself. What I learned in doing intensive dietary intervention with my son is that every child is different and we must approach this in a sensible manner. While I was aggressive and I felt this necessary for us to heal him, I did break it down. I slowly worked to teach him that Mommy is in charge. We listen to mommy. First______ then desired food. In the beginning it was bite of carrot for gfcf cookie bar. Eventually it was eat a bowl of steamed carrots and get 1/8 bite of gfcf cookie bar. Then it was eat all your vegetables for Mommy's homemade millet cookie bar sweetened with Lakanto (body ecology). I wouldn't take all the bad out. I would work on simple goals first. For week one, maybe we work on getting a new food in that will nourish the body. We use the desired food to get ONE TINY bite. Celebrate and reward with the desired food. Gradually having the child do more for the "bad desired food." When you have more nourishing foods in a child you have more to work with. For a kid like mine who ate gluten and casein only, I had to start somewhere. So I let him have a cracker, but I switched over to gfcf versions. Though these new gfcf versions aren't going to heal a child, it was a start. Next use this healthier version of a cracker to get the kid eating celery. Step by step you take the bad out and the good in. Just today 2 years into this, I made vegetable soup, yellow squash pudding sweetened with Lakanto, and cultured vegetables. I had about 10 tiny gfcfsf pretzels on the table. As he took bites of lunch he got a bite of pretzel. In the beginning it was 45 minutes of screaming strapped into a chair to get that first bite. AS soon as he realized he would be rewarded and had a system he could trust the struggle lessened. All the while good foods are healing the body and changing the cravings/ph. Today he asks "may I be excused." "Is this good for my body?" We've come a long way. Now he is mainstreamed in a Montessori homeschool and sits amongst 12 peers eating gold fish crackers etc.....He drinks his green drink first and then eats Mommy's homemade seed crackers. Don't give up on diet. It is the foundation and biomedical approaches will be more effective with this in place. Best to you all. Guest guest
God bless you, you are strong. I would have definitely caved and fed my kid something illegal by now. Hang in there. Have you tried literally sitting on him and making him eat? (I'm sure someone on this board will bash me for saying that.) Put a bite in his mouth and do not let him spit it out. Sounds awful but maybe just a few bites of food would encourage him to keep going. Good luck. Re: SCD - Started last Saturday - child not eating Hi everyone,My son has still not eaten a morsel of food. The ironic thing is that his skin is nice and smooth, although this hasn't been much of a problem, his mood is for the most part as good or better than before we started the diet, also he seems to be playing with toys a bit more and whats most exciting to me is this morning he made the thumbs up sign with his thumb. For quite some time when he asks for something I often will give him the thumbs up sign for yes, forces him to look at me for response instead of me just getting it or saying yes. Well he imitates me but always says "thumbs up" and puts up his index finger, I have tried to help him use his thumb but he just couldn't do it. Well this morning he asked for juice and I did thumbs up he put up his index finger then put in down with his other and turned his little hand sideways and gave me a bit thumbs up. I have no idea if this is food related but I suspect that it has something to do with it.Now my interpretation of this is that GOD is answering my prayers to keep going and not worry so much that he isn't eating.Remember everyone, mine is the boy who eats nothing except CARBS no fruits no meats no veggies I can not go back wards and give in and let him eat junk which is basically nutritionally starving him anyway. If I have to feed him through IV or go to a feeding clinic I will do whatever. I am not going backwards.I do think that he has been getting way too much juice albeit SCD legal, juice is juice. My husband thought that I had watered down the white grape juice that was in the refrig but I hadn't so he is getting too much juice. Maybe when we pull the juice he will eat. Time will tell. Just wanted to update.Any thoughts advise always appreciated. > > > >> > > > Hi everyone,> > > > > > > > Just to refresh your memory I decided to put my son on the SCD > > > diet, > > > > well it is almost a week so I thought I would update you all > and > > > > tweak your brains a little.> > > > > > > > Remember my DS eats no fruits, no veggies, no meats, was only > > CARBS > > > > waffles pancakes toast pizza mac cheese chicken nuggets etc etc.> > > > > > > > My husband and girls left Friday for the long weekend. Guest guest
Glad to hear you are hanging in there. Can you dilute his juice with a broth made from boiled vegetables and fruit? This could get more nutrients into him. He will cave soon I am sure. Maybe he is enjoying the break his gut is getting from not having to digest foods. lasbirdie wrote: > Hi everyone, > > My son has still not eaten a morsel of food. Guest guest
Stevia and lakanto are not scd legal. Diluted grape juice is recommended. Pineapple juice and blueberry are more advanced juices. Diluting the juice with a homemade vegetable broth will get more nutrients. However, most of these kids eventually give in. We had a party to introduce the foods. I made a bunch of chicken and put it on toothpicks and called them party sticks. We had little friends over and they ate them right up. My boys followed right along. We also made popsicles from the applesauce and pearsauce and sometimes a pureed vegetable hidden in it. They LOVED these. Another time we set up a picnic infront of the TV. That was fun too. Do what you can but stick to what you feel is right. If you are not uncomfortable with his not eating, then he is probably fine. Let your instincts guide you. tylertaylin wrote: > if his eyes look good, skin looks good, urinating, hydrated, he > will be ok. > > I wouldn't try to put food in his mouth, it won't work.
