Thanks for the link. I'll definitely check it out.

My son didn't have absence seizures (that must have been someone else), but he

is definitely trying to speak now. I waited five and a half years to hear

" Mommy " and what music to my ears when I hear it. Many people on the list

provided encouragement to me last year when an SLP told me that my son, who at

the time, was almost five, would probably never speak. He couldn't repeat sounds

or mouth movements, had no way of indicating yes or no, etc. Their encouragement

made me determined to fight harder and we started him with another SLP. Now he

repeats sounds, can imitate some mouth movements and can say " Mommy " , " Daddy " ,

" juice " , " cookie' and about ten other words (including yes and no, which he uses

quite well I might add -- especially the no!) I have to laugh at the memory of

hearing him just last week when I went in to my daughter's room to read her a

bedtime story. I thought he was asleep, but as I started reading to her we heard

this little voice coming from the heating grate in the wall saying " Mommy "

" Mommy " (it's an older house and the heating grate is shared between the two

rooms so you can look through it if you get down on your hands and knees). He

had only been saying " Mommy " for about four weeks so it was a wonderful moment

for me as my daughter and I giggled and my heart secretly soared.

While we may be gearing up for a fight with the province over our ABA service,

at least we have these little miracles to keep our spirits up.

Rhoda

a great website is

www.lafeat.org

they also have a group. Their resources are superb. Parents are

very knowledgeable. I am a newbie (son started ABA in home in mid

April!) I can give some help but I think it worth it to peruse this

site and perhaps joint the group for pointers.

Congrats on your son beginning to speak!!! What a joy!!!! Did you ever

find out about those " absence seizures " we discussed or did you start

medicating for that???

That is wonderful. It gives me such hope.

The absence seizure comment was about an email we shared several

months back where you explained it was a possibility but not a

certainty..you thought he was possibly having something go on when you

would go in his room during his sleep and he was awake and you had to

do a few things to finally get his attention. It was several months

ago we emailed about that.

Anyways

my son is non verbal (or preverbal) at age 3 and one month. He has

also dyspraxia/apraxia issues and so I am searching for a great SLP to

contend with these issues as well. I have lots of hope! Thanks for

giving me a reason to hope Rhoda. I am so glad your little one has

started to voice your name. What a lovely word we will never tire of

from our guys...Mommy!
