Guest guest
I’ve read several times about the importance of the GF/CF/SF diet – which we have been on for almost 9 months now. My little 3 year old was a chicken nugget addict back then and still is now…only they are yummie, GF/CF/SF brand which is costing me a fortune for a box at the health food store. The only other meat he will eat is turkey bacon. I realize that I replaced one thing with something that is allowed on the diet….but seriously, this cannot carry on forever. HOW HOW HOW do you get your extremely food sensitive child to TRY new meats? I have tried everything. I’m learning so much about removing carbs and sugars and relying on healthy meats and fruits and veggies – but I just cannot get him to consider a tiny amount of new meat. So he is no longer an addict to the gluten foods, but now his new non-gluten nuggets. I’m made progress from eating them in nugget form to now eating them chopped up into tiny pieces……that was a big hurdle. He wouldn’t touch them at first if they were cut up. So I’m making progress…..just how do I get to the NEW MEAT option? He’s getting his protein for sure, but I’d like it to be from a variety of meats, not just chicken every day….. Thanks for the encouragement and input! " Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for... Guest guest
As for the expense, I have a great recipe for tempura gf chicken nuggets. Very easy to make. Make a big batch and put them in the freezer just like you would with store bought nuggets. You can even use organic chicken. These are delicious and my whole non-gf family loves them. GF Tempura Chicken Nuggets Make Batter: 1 egg yolk ¼ c gfcf flour ¼ cup cornstarch 1/3 c ICE water ¼ tsp salt dash pepper ¼ tsp sugar (U can leave this out if U want, or use honey) 1/2 tsp oil ½ tsp baking powder Clean and chop raw chicken into nuggets. If using tenders, you can coat about 10 in this batter. Drop all the chicken into the batter at once, stirring to coat. Fry in hot oil till golden about 5 minutes, turning once. Drain on paper towels. Freeze individually on cookie sheet then bag them for later use. As for other meats, try meatloaf or meatballs next. Maybe buy ground chicken to start with since it will be a familiar flavor and then move on to beef. My son started with chicken, moved on to ground meats, and will now eat a burger of either ground turkey or ground beef. You can freeze meatloaf too, and pull out slices as you need them. GFCF Meatloaf 2 lb. Beef/pork meatloaf mixture (or other ground meat, turkey works great!) 2 eggs 1 cup water or tomato sauce/juice 3 slices gfcf bread, ground to crumbs (I used Kinnekinnick) ¼ tsp garlic powder 1 tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper Mix eggs and water. Grind bread into crumbs. Add dry seasonings to crumbs. Add to egg/water and wisk. Let sit for 5 minutes to soak. Add meat. Grease a loaf pan and pat meat into loaf. Bake at 350 for 1 ½ hours. Save stringy meats for later as they really irritate the "sensory" part of them. Tommy gets upset when a stringy piece of ham or similar meat gets stuck in his teeth. Cut piece up small so they won't initially be intimidated by how much they have to chew them. Others on here will probably say that your son has replaced his regular nugget addiction with a gf nugget addiction and now you should put him on an SCD diet. Do what you are comfortable with. Addicting foods - even on GFCFSF/low sugar diet I’ve read several times about the importance of the GF/CF/SF diet – which we have been on for almost 9 months now. Guest guest
My son has meat issues too and eats the same chicken nuggets (Ians)...he used to eat ground meat, chicken and fish, but the last few months outright refuses (texture issue I think). The only fish he will eat it seems is Dover Sole....I think becuase its sooo light and easy to chew. Try that? I also found meatloaf (which I never made before but tried in desperation) works about 50% of the time...I put pureed cauliflower and an egg in with the meat as well as healthful herbs... I found with ground meat, that not all meats are created equal in his eyes...I had to try many different types of burger patties, organic beef, ground turkey, chicken, etc to find some he likes....he will also eat ground chicken meatballs sometimes....I find chicken and turkey are sometimes easier for him to chew.. I have been totally unsuccessful with regular chicken.....he used to eat it. No more.... Guest guest
Thank you for the recipes. I have tried many homemade chicken nuggets – and the stinker won’t touch them. The rest of my family LOVES them – they are delicious, but my little ASD guy notices a difference before even touching them – and they LOOK SO MUCH LIKE the store brand I buy. Monday night he caved after about an hour and did gobble them all up. Last night they sat there on the table for 2+ hours – and he kept going back to the table so I KNEW he was hungry, but he wouldn’t cave. And that is the worst when they won’t eat. He picked at some tator tots, raisins and a few apple slices. That was his supper. I hate that. Guest guest
I couldn’t get my little guy to try the Ians brand – I thought they were horrid too but I have found a new brand – Bell & and they are truly as good as Tyson or restaurant brand nuggets – they are delicious. But I pay $6.25 for a box of only 12 of them – but they are larger sized. I haven’t tried GF/CF fish sticks – I’ll have to look for them and give them a try – but if it doesn’t look the same or “right” in his mind, he won’t even come close to it. Feeding him is such a daily struggle and I SO envy the parents that get their children to do the meat and veggie diet only. This is so frustrating b/c when he was a baby and one year old, he’d eat anything I put in front of him. WOW have things changed. Anything that resembles anything else in the form of meat – hamburger, sausage, meatball, he won’t touch with a ten foot pole either. I will continue to try the homemade nuggets – at least that way I don’t have to keep going to the Health Food store and buying all the packages of Bell & that they have in stock. Surely adds up in a hurry. I like the convenience, but I know I need to get him off this addiction or whatever it is. I thank you for all your suggestions. I will continue to pray for us all! Guest guest
Sorry! Ummm, some of 's other favorites are avocado, nuts (I know we have to be careful with those), chicken vienna sausages, Hebrew National Hot Dogs and broccoli ( " little trees " ). Would he eat grated up veggies and meat mixed into the gluten free pancake batter? Most kids do end up craving the " good " foods once they've detoxed.
