Guest guest
I don't think I've ever said " Thank you " to all of you and I'm not sure why I would think that it goes without saying. I want to take the opportunity now to thank you parents that fought the idea of institutions for our kids, that refused to believe the doctors when they told you our kids would never be thinking, feeling, worthwhile individuals. For you that searched and searched for solutions and help and never gave up hoping. When my son was diagnosed with PDD at 2 years (and he really wasn't talking then), there was no suggestion of an institution. I firmly believe that is because your attitude and beliefs are permeating the medical field. It may be slow, but doctors are now working toward goals that their profession didn't believe possible 20 years ago. It's thanks to you. You didn't give up. You've paved the way for me and my son. I know that and I am very very grateful. I've never said it before because I guess it didn't occur to me that you wouldn't realize how important you are to me and all the other moms who may be hearing " he's autistic " for the first time. You've done the ground-breaking stuff, but I do try to carry on your work. I argue with teachers when they say my son can't have/do something and I ask " why? " until they give in. I try to make things a little easier for the moms that come after me. I realize that there is still a lag in information and expectations regarding what our kids suffer from and what they can accomplish, but it has come a long way. Your fight has made a big difference in my life. I think we really are in the same boat, but you pioneers have mapped the waters for us and made our path easier. My son's victories are your victories as well because you fought for him before he was even born and before the dreaded day we were told the " A " word. I wish all the best for you and your kids and may the ones that come after us be even more blessed by the legacy. Sincerely, April
