Charlotte,

One more point on starting a support group. Write a press release and answer the

following questions to the public, what, when ,where, why, and how. When you

think of what you want to

write in a flier. also send one to your local papers, schools. What I did was

look up slp's, ot's, pediatricians, hospitals with speech clinics in the phone

book and mail a flier to them. Ask if they would like to be on a professional

email

or mailing list, ie references, including the local speech and hearing

association in your state. Jeanne

with severe autism. i think the today show series starts this week about

autism also. i will let you know how the support group for asd at the school

goes.

Has anyone started or considered starting a support group in your

city? I have been considering this as I have learned about several

Asperger children in the area. I was just wondering if it worked out

or if you had any ideas about how to get started. I have been trying

to contact the Autism Society of Alabama but they don't return emails

or phone calls even when I've signed the volunteer card online.

I will love to have a support group too here in Langley BC Canada.

I am moving to Chillliwack BC tough but If you find how to open one

please let me know!

I would prefer to have it in my house than to travel to somewhere else.

I started a group here several months ago in NC. First, set your

goals, what do you want to accomplish? Have By-laws set up so the

group has guidelines to follow, find a meeting spot (churches are good

spots to ask for space from) and then get flyers, posters and business

cards with your group name, meeting time, email address and such out.

Be clear what your group wishes to accomplish, have a mission

statement. We are still small but have made some great connections with

our local TEACCH, Partnership for Children and even our local museum of

art. We are growing slowly...but make sure you have help. It's a big

undertaking and you will need a partner or " board " .

Good luck!

Hello

Yes a friend and I have started a HFA/AS Support group in our area in NC. It

has been interesting. We are not " in " with any national organization and we

have had monthly meeting for 3 months. We met through an ad she put in the

local paper looking for anyone interested in starting a support group. We

decided to do it together and it has been going well. We are not super

organized yet but really I think everyone just likes to come together and

realize they are not alone! We are planning on doing more specific meetings and

stuff but right now we are just getting going.

I looked on line and there are a few good places to get info on how to start a

group...I think I just goggled " how to start a support group "

Good Luck!
