Guest guest
I would love to do away with all the hassles of insurance and billing, but I dont think it would fly here in Kansas. Also, I have alot of medicare pts who I dont feel right about sending them away. Elaine, you still have time to opt out of Medicare. They extended the deadline to Feb 15th because of the last minute payment changes. A. Eads, M.D. Pinnacle Family Medicine, PLLC phone fax P.O. When I applied for my NPI, I was rejected. I discovered that the HMO that I work for has already applied for me and that I am already participating in Medicare/medicaid. If I opt out of medicare (which I can only do in nov/dec so I am stuck for this year) I will no longer be able to moon light at the HMO. I would like to moon light to earn some income as my IMP is just getting started. I was wondering if this is an option- apply for a new NPI no. under my corporation and become non par w medicare under my group/ corporation. My individual NPI would stay with the HMO and par w medicare? You know when you call medicare, their recording says any information given to you may change at anytime!? Someone recommended I call 3 times for every question I have becasue I might get 3 differnet answers. Folks on this listserve have so much combined experience, I am really looking forward to your comments. Guest guest
Have a form for pts to sign, acknowledging that they understand you don’t have any relationship with Medicare and they can’t submit your office visit bill to medicare. Post it on your website (if/when you get one), tell people when they call to inquire about your practice. Just because you are not a provider with medicare doesn’t mean you can’t see them. I have a number of folks I see who have medicare, but they pay me directly. A. Eads, M.D. Pinnacle Family Medicine, PLLC phone fax P.O. Guest guest
Here's what I found out. If you are working for one company and they bill medicare, you have to be participating. You can check their policy or work something else out with them. If you are opting out of medicare in your own practice and need to opt in in your moon lighting, then you need 2 NPI's. I have one individual one and one corporate one ( apply for NPI as a group practice, type 2). If you are not incorporated, I used smallbiz.com to be incorp. It was about $300 or less and straight forward. I am opening a practice and would like to opt out ofmedicare, however I too moonlight. Guest guest
You are right. I was a Participating Provider and had to give more notice than a NonParticipating. I've been out for a month and it's a BIG deal but it needed to be done. One issue I did not consider was the large number of old records that I would need to get together for patients to change doctors. It can save time/money if you can find out from the new doctors if they can receive the chart in electronic form instead of paper. You'll do well with the ship, I hope you're right handed!
