Guest guest
The only place in the MD-DC-VA area doing SPECT scans is the Amen Clinic in Reston, VA. I would not recommend taking your child there. The machines are not current and the staff has little knowledge regarding children on the 'spectrum'. The cost is about $5000 - you get 2 brain SPECTs, an interview and then (this is quite nice) a 1-2 hr mtg with one of their trnd staff who goes over the findings. For an extra $500 you can have a thorough 45-1 hr eval with Dr Amen. Their recommendations often involve 'dulling' the brain rather than healing it (they aren't shy about recommending some pretty strong drugs) But .... They would not work with Brain Matters. Dr Amen has a number of books written on SPECTg the brain but his work is taken as hot/cold in the medical community depending on who you talk to. They do make for good reading tho. Brain Matters Inc does have plans to move east. The interest in their work thru the Dr Phil show appears to have accelerated these plans. I was told VA and NY-LI were pinned on their map. doris land Posted by: " tebog2 " tebog2@... <mailto:tebog2@...?Subject=Re:%20Eileen%2FDr%20appt%2E> tebog2 <tebog2> Mon Oct 16, 2006 11:35 pm (PST) Hi Eileen, Thanks for the reply; someone told me something similar, that they do the neurospect in VA, although I assumed its already being done there. I am sorry you had a rough appt with your son. I hope you were able to get some things accomplished. How old is he? These poor kids go through so much, but we go through it right along with them, you just got to keep going on. What was the appt like? Did they do an exam, a history, that type of thing? I find with my son (hes 8) that preparing him ahead of time helps a lot, using visual techniques like pictures/words. It doesnt help in every situation, but I try anyway. I try to, when I have the time, do social stories with him, so even though it may be unpleasant, there shouldnt be any surprises. I cant do it with everything such as bloodwork, because if he realizes he may get blood taken, I wouldnt even get him in the car. Now that hes had it done a few times, when we get near the hospital, he starts asking if it will be done. When he has to go in the office, I have to drag him, & then hold him down which is no easy task since he is 4 1/2ft & 87lbs. Its really difficult, especially when you are alone. I hope you had someone with you. Good luck with the results, and thanks again. Eileen
