Here is what I have.

Skunk spray in human eyes is extremely irritating and can cause temporary blindness, but no permanent damage. Flush eyes liberally with cold water to ease irritation. Wash skin with carbolic soap and water, tomato juice, or vinegar or Massengil douch. You may be able to save clothing by washing repeatedly in vinegar water and/or hanging it outside for a month or so before dry-cleaning. For the worst sprays, however, it may be best to discard or burn the clothing.

When your pet is sprayed, the quicker you take action, the more completely you can remove the odor. Wash your pet with tomato juice, Massengil douch, or diluted vinegar to counteract the chemical makeup of the skunk spray. Skunk Off and similar preparations containing neutroleum alpha, available from some pet stores, are effective.

Skunk Smell Remedy: 1 quart 3% peroxide, 1/4 c baking soda, 1 tbs liquid hand soap. Mix all three ingredients together. Shampoo animal thoroughly keeping out of eyes, nose and mouth. Soak 5 minutes. Rinse well.

Most times the dog will get it in the neck because he's turned his head...but rinse/flush with cool water... you may have to call a vet ... it would depend... but keep the shampoos, remedies etc... out of the dogs eyes...

Hi Diane,

Funny story :-) and I'm glad that no one was hurt.

I do hope you will pick up the cat food bowl at night in future. Who knows who is eating out of that bowl?

I left a bowl of water outside for my dogs but I usually empty it at the end of the day to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in it. Well last night, when I opened the door to let the dogs back in from their late night potty break, there was a stench of SKUNK, and Sheba's head was rather stinky. I had forgotten to empty out that water bowl, and hope that hadn't enticed the stinky visitor =:o

Sheba seemed ok, and I do have a recipe to get rid of the smell, but can anyone tell me (for the future) what I should do if they get sprayed in the eyes? I hear it's very nasty!

It's kinda a funny story... dh went out in his nightshirt armed with a flashlight to run the dog out of the catfood bowl, BUT it wasnt a dog! So he yelled at the BEAR

As long as you keep them out of the sun they should be okay. However,

according to the experts they are color blind anyway so would never

notice. LOL

Poison control told me that hydrogen peroxide can cause pits in the eyeballs so to keep it out of the eyes. If you get some in the eyes they told me to flush them with water (in the shower) for 15 minutes. I accidently got some in my son's eyes when got a minor injury when he was 3.

Anyway, just thought i'd pass that on....

Thanks very much Suzi. Last night I realized that I didn't have a clue what to do if she'd been sprayed in the eyes. So now I'll remember to flush them with water. I've heard that the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap recipe is the best, although I have black labs who wouldn't want to be peroxide blondes {LOL} I hope that Sheba has learned the lesson that the black and white "kittie" should be left alone!!!

Thanks,

LOLTrue, although I think they can distinguish between black and white, but they have trouble with green and red - darned dogs steal the GREEN tomatoes from the garden! I wouldn't mind if they didn't throw them up in the middle of the night {LOL}. and the K9's
