wow....gobsmacked would be right

And as for her attitude with the....'I wasn't like you'

I wouldn't have been able to hold my tongue

I'm sitting here wondering what would possess a surgeon to band

A person who isnt at all overweight

In fact I'm a bit speechless

And well done on your loss Christy

Leeanne

-- Gobsmacked!

Bizare experience on thursday. I went for a check up and was talking

to a lady who was thinking of having the surgery. This other lady

arrived and weighed in and made an off the cuff remark about not

losing anything and "I only had a small cake and skim milk!". She

looked fantastic! I couldn't help myself and asked "how much have

you lost?"

This very attractive average sized middle aged lady told me that she

wasn't like me, but rather asked to have the band put on because she

wanted it, but didn't need it. She said she was at the lowest limit

of weight chart and had lost 5kg, but put 3kg back on when she went

overseas. She then said that it was "harder to lose weight when you

had so little to lose".

I was gobsmacked! Apparently she had to pay $15k for her surgery

because she didn't need it and was choosing to have it done (which

makes me feel a little bette about it).

I can't tell you how many mixed feelings I have about this. And it

was all I could do not to harrangue my doctors (Dr T. happened to

swan in soon after) about it. I mean who chooses this when there

much less invasive procedures available that can do the same thing!

To be honest, I was also feeling a little smug with myself, having

lost 18kg and I quickly told the newbie that for someone like me, who

has had the disease of obesity since childhood, the surgery was well

worth it and the best thing I had ever done. Tootsie piped in that

she chose to have the surgery so she didn't get "the disease"!

Huh? [insert expletives here]!!!

Hi Girls,

Usually I'm only reading the daily digest - I'm a bit short on time

lately :-)

....but I can't help adding my 5 cents worth about the surgeon: If

it's the same one I heard about (Dr C. T.) then he's the only surgeon

doing lap banding who's driving a red FERRARI ! I can imagine that

one has to work hard (and can't be too choosy) to show off :-)

Cheers,

Beth, That is where I go and he is also my surgeon. But I too have to

add my 5cents worth...well, its more like 50cent worth. Why on earth

would you have surgery if you don't need it for health reasons. Ive

been banded for 5 weeks this coming week and have lost 18kgs since I

started optifast 2 weeks preop. Ive been a big girl my entire life and

it took me 2yrs of research and courage to have the surgery and I am

sooooo thankful that this was an option available to me. It makes me

mad when someone pays that much for an operation that is not actually

needed when there are people who can not scrape the money together to

have it done who actually need it. It also makes me wonder where her

mental state is at?

Christy...congrats on the weight loss its fantastic.

Glad to hear it wasn't CT at Ashfield.

He seems too on the ball to even consider people not really in need

of the operation. And when you do the maths why would you bother 1.

financially with lapbanding let alone 2. the fact that it isn't an

easy or quick fix.

Christy I can't see MT doing it either, I wouldn't be surprised if he inherited the patient from another doctor. He is way to ethical to do it. He even said to me when I initially went that my BMI at the time might be too high for him to do it successfully and safely.

No the dr isn't CT at ashfield, but Dr MT at St ! I wouldn't have thought he would do this as he seems like such an ethical man. I think you're point that she considered it a cosmetic procedure seems to make sense. Maybe she's one of those surgery junkies. Not sure.I'm glad to know I'm not the only one feeling so engraged by it. I'm also reminded that the literature suggests that the band will only help you lose 60-70% of your excess weight - so really 2kg from 5kg excess weight is about that - sucked in tootsie!!!! Hi all,

It has been a very long time since I have chimed in, and I know alot

of you won't necessarily know me, but I feel the need to jump in here

quickly.

Firstly, we don't know the full story about this woman (with the low

BMI), she said that she was on the " border " of being able to have

surgery, this could mean that she is just under the BMI rate,

however, she could suffer some serioius co-morbidities which pushes

her eligibility up, this information we don't readily have.

As for the money that she spent, she could have seriously meant that

she had to pay more money because she wanted it now and didn't have

the appropriate health cover, which would put her in the sum of

around $15,000.

We really need to have all our information very acurate before we

start talking about surgeons and their morals, I know that only

initials have been used, however, we, all in the banded world know

who we are talking about.

Now please don't get me wrong, because at times it all seems hard and

unfair, and it seems that there are people out there that are purely

cosmetic about this whole thing, but please let's all be careful when

we are talking about people/surgeons, and their practices.

Thanks for listening, and I hope that you all understand where I am

coming from.

Fair Comment Andi

I wasn't too happy with the maligned comment my surgeon received by one respondent.

As you say we don't know the woman who caused the gobsmack story only the reaction she caused from one of our own. And that reaction is still valid. We all feel vulnerable when the issue of our weight and losses are confronted by people we feel don't perhaps take the seriousness of this lifechanging procedure as seriously. Despite your own comments, obviously it was the tone our writer was confronted with that caused them to write in the first place.>> Hi all,> > It has been a very long time since I have chimed in, and I know alot > of you won't necessarily know me, but I feel the need to jump in here > quickly.> > Firstly, we don't know the full story about this woman (with the low > BMI), she said that she was on the "border" of being able to have > surgery, this could mean that she is just under the BMI rate, > however, she could suffer some serioius co-morbidities which pushes > her eligibility up, this information we don't readily have.> > As for the money that she spent, she could have seriously meant that > she had to pay more money because she wanted it now and didn't have > the appropriate health cover, which would put her in the sum of > around $15,000.> > We really need to have all our information very acurate before we > start talking about surgeons and their morals, I know that only > initials have been used, however, we, all in the banded world know > who we are talking about. > > Now please don't get me wrong, because at times it all seems hard and > unfair, and it seems that there are people out there that are purely > cosmetic about this whole thing, but please let's all be careful when > we are talking about people/surgeons, and their practices.> > Thanks for listening, and I hope that you all understand where I am > coming from.> > Luv Andi>

Hi Andi

You know your right to remind us we don't have the facts

I'm always judging people who judge people....groan

And I have jumped in and done just that

For all we know the lady may have medical issues or family members with obesity etc etc

I wish her success
