Hello group,

I have some questions about nursing services for our children. I know it

depends on the insurance, state and the child's condition, but I thought it was

best to ask this group since us parents are the experts.

My son Mason is 6 and currently is approved for nursing services during school

and up to 50 hours according to how often I work. I recently got laid off but

Mason's insurance is not aware yet so he will continue to get up to 50 hours

until they find out (which will probably be in August when he gets a

reauthorization). He is on the ketogentic diet, g-tube fed, and has seizures

which is why he requires a nurse with him at school.

He will be transitioning from pre-school to the school district this September

and I am concerned about nursing services. Right now he has 2 tremendous nurses

who have been with him over a year but they are through an outside agency and

approved by insurance. I was told that once he reaches school age this will be

completely denied by insurance and the school district will have to provide

these services.

I met with the school district and they are not sure if they can provide private

nursing or not & they said the definitely can NOT use the same agency which

means he can't keep the same nurses. I'm extremely unhappy about this and the

uncertainty is very overwhelming. I'm still uncertain what will happen when

he's sick or during the summer or during holidays. Right now his nurse watches

him at home if he's sick or during holidays and in the summer.

I am in the process of going to nursing school and not sure if I can do it if

Mason doesn't have a nurse or doesn't have a nurse during sick/holiday time.

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar situation or could provide me with

any advice. Mason is currently on medicaid through the state and we live in PA.

Sorry so long. Thanks for any input!

Chrissy
