Louise, First try to give her more large motor or heavy work sensory activities

like rolling her uplike a hot dog in blankets, massage, pressure, weighted

things blankets or pushing heavy laundry baskets, shovel or mower, wear tight

underarmor shirts. If you see fingers in the mouth first try popsickle or gum or

crunchy or sour. I used warhead spray no more drooling or fingers except when

she is having brand new therapy or so I see fingers to yhe mouth.

how to stop putting hands in mouth?

Hi everyone

Was wondering if any of you have any tips to stop my daughter putting her hands

in her mouth. She is 3 years old and and quite severe sensory issues. But the

mouthing of her hands has got more and more , pretty much non stop these days.

Not sure if it is her teeth as well as the sensory pleasure she gets from it. I

would have to distract her all the time or put gloves on to give her sore red

hands a break.

Thanks louise, mum to Scarlett

Hi Louise,

My son Wyatt chews up his hands as well, he bites everything.  We have tried

gloves, distracting him, nothing has worked completly.  We were told that he

has severe sensory issues.  Wyatt has a compression vest, we do things like

joint compressions, we can only touch him with firm hands, and other things.

On top of the biting Wyatt always hits his head, he smacks it, punches it with

both fists, and bangs his forehead into the tile floor.  Does Scarlett ever do

anything like that? Sorry I'm probably of no help.

Could be sensory needs or behavioral issues. For sensory, in addition to the

suggestions below, you could try a buzzy tool in her mouth (for example a " z

vibe " ). Check out the special needs catalogues, the tools are not expensive, and

she may really like chewing on it. Here in the states, various " mega shops " like

Walmart carry buzzy stars and grape bunches for kids who are teething to chew

on. Does your daughter have an OT you can consult about this? If not, perhaps

her pediatrician can refer you to one. They are usually the ones to do sensory

stuff. Good luck!

Hi Miriam

Scarlett has a lycra bodysuit to give her body sensory feedback. She likes to

rub her head on the floor when laying down, but has not started to hit her head.

She has low muscle tone, so prob would not be able to hurt herself with her

hands. It's really frustrating that she is so obsessed with her hands, I might

try arm splints for an hour a day to try and break the habit.
