Guest guest
Hi Jeff, it’s incredibly frustrating isn’t it? I used to have terrible IBS but I have gradually brought it under control. Other folks may have different experiences but I’ll tell you what worked for me. First, you have to get a handle on any hidden food allergies/sensitivities. There is tons of info out there as to how to do that, but you can start by cutting out the obvious things…wheat, dairy, eggs, corn etc. Also go on an IBS diet (also common info), reducing bowel irritants. I also use foods and supps to moderate the “activity”. Magnesium can open things up, take care with the dosage though and don’t go too far! I actually take Mag. Citrate as the least bowel-disturbing type (there are several types). Aloe Vera juice is a gentle stimulant too. To “bung up”, I just make sure all veg and fruit are very well cooked, and, for me, goat cheese (I don’t do dairy) works well! Many people take acidophilus or other probiotics to promote bowel rehab…for some reason this is completely constipating for me. I don’t know about flax oil as a laxative, but your guts need proper nutrition to heal, including the fatty acids. Drink lots of water too! Finally, I went through a program of alternative treatments for allergies etc. called NAET (just google it, it is acupuncture-based) for 3 years, which improved things dramatically for me. I ended up on a diet of only chicken and white rice for several years because I was almost globally allergic; now I have an almost normal diet, excluding wheat, most dairy, pepper and hot spices, and a few other things. Obviously all this takes time, and there are a million books and types of advice out there – this is just what works for me. I’m not perfect, but I can leave the house not wondering if I’m gonna have to pull the car over and run for the woods…that used to happen a lot! My ME is not better, but at least I can eat decently and my guts are about 8o% better than they were a few years ago. Good luck! Guest guest
Hey Jeff, Doctors have a nasty way of lumping illnesses together. Do you know that IBD has two illnesses: Ulcerative Cholitis and Chrones Disease? They each take separate, opposite treatments. I just found this out myself through a newsletter I get. I'd suggest you make sure which one you have first, so that you're on the right path. I used to take flaxseed oil in the liquid form, but it didn't help anything. Good luck. Since my hospital visit and my intestines being paralized for awhile, I have not felt the same...I am so frustrated! I have a great employer but who knows how long this will take and I worry about losing my job and being able to take care of my family. Guest guest
Hi , no offense but IBD and IBS are different things. Yes, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, but Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is neither of these. I just googled “IBD IBS” to check and there is good info differentiating the two. All these letters…it does get confusing! Guest guest
I'm so sorry you're so young having to deal with a problem.I have IBS, but I didn't get it until I was in my 50's! I ran a couple of support groups for people in chronic pain( I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue ,as well). I've done countless hours of research and experimentation. This group is the best for info and has great people. I have found that fiber-like ground flax is good for both types of problems -diarhea and constipation. I also use a clear fiber supplement. If you are lose it bulks you up. If you are constipated, the Fiber Sure will soften the stool.Just GO SLOWLY,though. I still only use about a half a teaspoon of the Fiber Sure and a tablespoon of flaxseed. Everyone is different, so you have to use your own discretion. My friend bloats up when she tries to use a fiber too much.If you're constipated and your intestines just won't go, milk of magnesia was recommended-only a little.Actually enough magnesium in any form will do the same thing. Again,go slowly. Another thing I've used is an enema but only if I'm in dire straights. Not the ones with meds, just a plain bag. There's a technique to that, which I won't go into. Hopefully, in time, your bowel wil get back to normal. All this may be caused by the handling of the bowel when removing the obstruction. I've had 5 abdominal surgeries and I've realized the bowel just doesn't like being handled. I'm not on this site much but you can always email me (buhbrad60@...) Hope this helps! > > What are some ways that you deal with your IBS?
