yea i always had a student specific para and a nurse. we provided the nurse and

the school board provided the para. never had to fight for one bc they knew i

wasn't capable of taking notes, turning pgs etc. we had to struggle in hs for

them to get the right person qualified for the job. my sr yr i got a lady who

was 72, what a joke, she had a hard time keeping up w/ me bc i had all honors

classes. so eventually i got one who was going to school to be a teacher, she

worked out perfect

This is a last minute plea. I have an IEP meeting tomorrow and I just

found out they have given my son's aide a pink slip because of funding

cuts and she is the newest employee. I was counting on having her next

year. Do any of you know of any laws in California that I might mention

to them to prevent her getting fired. Thanks, Jerri

Hi Jerri,

If his IEP requires him to have an access aide, then they will have to

provide one, or they will be out of compliance. But I don't know of

any law that can prevent them from firing a specific person. Make

sure that the IEP states that the access aide is " fully trained and

qualified " , or whatever language ensures the aide will be

appropriately equipped to assist your son.

And don't be afraid to get an attorney if you need to. Many special

ed attorneys will waive or reduce their fees for families who can't

afford to pay the full retainer fee.

Hi Jerri,

Consult with a parent advocate. Where do you live, maybe our advocate can

give you some advice.

Good luck,
