Guest guest
Typical school was never an option for us... is in a small special education program... not mainstreamed... and it was the best thing we ever did. He gets therapy there daily....and so much more...but we have IEP battles too. Sorry things are so difficult for Micah.... by the way.....if regular school is not working....the school system HAS TO send Micah to an outplacement that is best suited. There are options... be tough.... ________________________________ To: PMG support group <polymicrogyria > Sent: Mon, January 24, 2011 11:17:21 PM Subject: Public Schools Has anyone ever had trouble when it came to your PMG child and school? My husband and I decided to pull our son out (Micah BPP). It was so bad that I had to stay with him everyday because he was getting treated differently (We've had countless meetings about that issue and nothing got fixed). Its been 2 weeks since we took him out and its STILL a constant battle. His IEP is all wrong. According to them he knows nothing pretty much because they have to, " physically see him acheive his goals " . I got his ERT form that goes with his IEP and that's completely wrong too! They noted that we pulled him out because of all of his doctors appts. When I sopke to his EI Specialist, I told her he does have a lot of appts but the school was also wasting our time. She will not state that they were wasting our time because it will, " make them look bad " . Guest guest
Hi, Where do you live may I ask? Some states/counties/specific schools have better programs and facilitators for following the IEP and cooperating and collaborating with parents to help our unique kids find where and how they blossom socially and educationally. We had a horrible time in Rural West Sonoma County California but now in Santa Cruz county, it is the best yet! We had to apply and have a hearing for an inner-district transfer out of our last school because we just didn't have the same educational and social principals for our son. Basically they were practically stuck in the stone age! I had to stay focused on what i knew may work for him, where and how he could bloom. Josh is 9, 3rd grade. It's amazing to think that about a generation ago, most parents were encouraged to institutionalize their kids like ours, and there most often was no public special ed. We've come along way but the road is still long ahead, lots of work for all of us. Stay focused, stay strong! Guest guest
, I was told that I could take Micah wherever I want. BUT, he would still have to go to our local school for services (OT, PT, SLP and Early Intervention). Thanks for the email! I'll look into that more. -allison Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® Public Schools Has anyone ever had trouble when it came to your PMG child and school? Guest guest
That is SO true. We've lived in 5 states / 6 districts. Ohio is the only one I've had a problem with. Guest guest
I don't THINK that's true. We've had therapy at home, and I know that some of the public school therapists go to after school programs (day cares and such) as well as private schools. But, I'm not totally sure that it's required. For summer we take Mysha to them for therapy. Sent from my iPhone > , > > I was told that I could take Micah wherever I want. Guest guest
, That's what I was told through MRDD, Help Me Grow, and his school when we had our transition meeting. I'm not to worried about him getting it at school anymore since he has private OT, PT, and SLP. I would like him to have Early Intervention still. I still have your number, so I'll be giving you a call. Thanks. - Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® Public Schools > > Has anyone ever had trouble when it came to your PMG child and school? Guest guest
Hello ~ Our Son is 11 years old and has PMG the public schools (Regular Ed or Special Ed) didn't work for him. We live in Sonoma County, CA. The School system is paying for our son to go to a private school that is meeting his needs. Our son was not learning at all, he did a lot of coloring and watching TV before going to the school he is in now.. Now that he has been going to the private school he has learned to right his name (first and last), he can sight read over 75+ words, he is slowing learning phonics, He is adding numbers.. It has taken him almost 4 years to get what he has but we are very thankful. Hope you find what works for your son.. Guest guest
We have had issues with both our pmg and other child when it comes to school services. The most important thing is to document and followup every meeting with a letter summarizing the meeting to go into the file. This way the school has to be accountable and there is less incorrect info. I know parents that have gone to the extent of having the letters sent via certified mail so they would have proof the school got it. Also email can be used this way if you can have an email sent back to you when theirs has been opened. slaw.com and MI Alliance has IEP information and sample letters. We ended up enrolling our daughter in a virtual charter school so she still gets services but it is done at home as well as her schooling. It is working for her so far but we are still dealing with IEP situations when it comes to services but she is learning much more through their program and it works around our appointments. Best of luck, it is never easy getting what is necessary for our kiddos unfortunately. > > > , > > > > I was told that I could take Micah wherever I want. Guest guest
Hi Everyone! The wrightslaw.com website is an awesome resource. Even better are some of their books. Here are two I got off their website: All About IEP's From Emotions to Advocacy, The Special Education Survival Guide Another good book is: Special Needs Advocacy Resource Book by Rich Weinfeld and All these books have a lot of information about your legal rights and the process of IEP's. Many states offer programs that have professional advocates accompany you to IEP meetings to make sure the school districts are messing around. Here in Washington it is called PAVE. Some universities have special ed teacher that will also help. If your town/county doesn't have that support, then you may be able to hire someone. The wrightslaw.com website has information about professional advocates. It is a difficult and scary process and the school districts just don't want to have to fork over the money for our kids with all their special requirements. But they have to and we have to make sure they do it. Good luck! Guest guest
Thank you everyone for all of your replies. I did print off a packets worth of rights from s Law. There is so much more information about IEP's, and our rights in general, than the packet I had received from our local school district! I'm still in the process of getting Micah's ERT form fixed and should hear back from his school tomorrow. Thanks so much again, and good luck to you all who are having the same difficulty as we are! - Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® Public Schools > > > > Has anyone ever had trouble when it came to your PMG child and school? Guest guest
although my daughter Rowan is almost 4, (bilateral PMG) she has nursing care and the nurse goes to preschool with her. She is in a special ed class and very high functioning so they are going to put her in a mainstream four year old class next year. Without the nurse there I know she wouldn't get the attention or care she needs even though the district is great. The communication is a big factor and when something goes wrong with her equipment it would have been simply shut off and not dealt with. I say, fight and do what you have to do to get your child what they need. I have had so many fights with the district over IEP with my older asperger's child and now we homeschool and he is thriving, if a bit bored at times. It isn't an option for anyone but I'd rather have less in personal resources and a happy child than a miserable child and stressed out parent. I know that if Rowan has issues in public school I will not hesitate to homeschool her as well. Kids learn so much, and there are so many options out there. Don't let anyone make you accept no for an answer. Trailblazers didn't get where we are today by laying down and saying " well, ok " . Take a stand and good job parents for sticking up for your kids! I, too, am sickened by how much kids were institutionalized years ago. My own child would not even have survived or thrived and now she is testing years ahead of her age level. The fights we have to do to get them the services they need are mind boggling as well. Do not be afraid to contact your government reps as well! That is their job, to help make sure the districts are doing theirs! The squeaky wheel and all that. Yes, it does depend on the county. My county and school district are marvelous. I will not move anywhere else just based on the care my daughter is getting now. It's wonderful!!! good luck moms and dads! Kesa, Rowan bilateral PMG, other issues but high functioning, and Drew aspergers and both the loves of my life!
