Guest guest
At 2 our son Josh had near sightedness and his left eye was always 'crossed', right eye sometimes turned in as well. We decided to wait on the surgery after much consideration, and now he is 9 and it has corrected itself. No more crossing! It took until he was about 7 to correct, but that was our experience. He also refused to wear glasses. Sent from my iPhone Have any of your PMG children had eye muscle surgery to correct eye misalignments? My daughter who just turned 2 and has bilateral PMG wears glasses for near sightedness and astigmatism and doctor recommends eye muscle surgery to correct the alignment of both eyes. I was wondering if any of you have experience with this and what was the outcome of the surgery? Thanks, Jodi ( mom to Sirlei age 2 with bilateral PMG and Eliana 6 months nuerotypical) Sent from my iPhone
Guest guest
We've had 3 eye surgeries. They worked to realign the eyes forward and straight, however neurologically she still had problems with the eyes working together, so we are presently doing vision rehab therapy which has helped tremendously. > > Have any of your PMG children had eye muscle surgery to correct eye > misalignments? Guest guest
Our son (almost 4) also is near sighted, wears glasses, has ocular motor apraxia and has had 2 eye surgeries. His eyes are now perfectly alligned. He needed the second surgery to help with an eye that would drift upward and inward. He just had his second surgery this past September. For children with strabismus, the risk of developing amplyopia is high. This is when they loose vision in one eye due to using the strong eye to see things properly. Gage was loosing vision in his eye that was crossing and with his poor vision already, we did not want him to completely loose vision in that eye. It was explained to me that the brain just shuts down vision in that eye due to the other eye taking over to see things. Since the first surgery, he has regain the vision that he had lost (YEAH!). There may be some children that can go without the surgery and correct itself, but I would listen to the Dr. recommendation if he/ she feels that your child may loose vision in the weak eye. It would be just one less hurdle for your daughter. The surgery is out patient and Gage was back to doing his normal activities that evening. Unfortunatly, he looked like he got punched in the eyes, but he didn't ever complain or indicate to me that he was in any discomfort (he is verbal). I am glad that we went through with the surgeries. On a cosmetic note, for the longterm, his eyes will look better. People will know where to look when they are talking to him. I know it may sound shallow to some, but I think we all have experienced being uncomfortable trying to talk to someone when their eyes are misalligned. We just don't know exactly where to look. Again, it would be another thing that my son would not have to deal with. Guest guest
Hi there I've just recently joined this group. My daughter jenna has focal pmg and west syndrome. She's only 4 months old and I've been debating with the neurologists about her sight for a few months. After repeating myself a few times we were given a referal for an eye specialist. Thankfully it only took a few weeks and we're going next tues. I'm a single parent and being new to this I'm trying to throw us into anything that can help jenna achieve her potential. I just wanted to say how useful the group has been and I've only been joined a few days. Thank you. Guest guest
My son, , had eye muscle surgery one day after his first birthday. He is now 18 months old. Ben has bilateral PMG and was also born with cataracts in both eyes. He had one of the cataracts extracted at one week old and now wears a special lens in that eye (that we put in every day, sort of like a contact lens) to have vision in that eye. The other eye still has the cataract but it has not impeded his vision. The surgery was very successful for Ben. For several week afterwards, there was was some wondering and crossing, but his eyes have immensely aligned as a result of the surgery. We still see occasional wandering (from either eye, especially when he is tired) and crossing, but it has made a world of difference for his teaming and visual focus. His Oph has told us that it is not uncommon to have to repeat the surgery sometimes several times in order to find success. So far, I think Ben's has stuck and has helped him make visual progress. Oh, and he recovered quite well from the surgery with just a little bit of red eye the day of surgery. Doc said to expect bloody tears for 48 hrs. Hope this helps, please let me know if you have more questions. And good luck. > > Have any of your PMG children had eye muscle surgery to correct eye > misalignments?
