I'm having a hard time understanding why cereals with high fructose corn

syrup and other refined sugars are better for our children than whole grains

with no added sugar? Is it because the whole grains are harder to digest and

process?

Cereals

I thought I would pass this along. Dr G told us to take bran out of

our son's diet. This is in the crunchy corn bran cereal he eats. 9

months ago Dr G did not have a problem with it but now wants us to

remove....easier cereals like rice crispies and corn flakes only.

Thought I'd share!

My understanding is that he doesn't really like sugars and would

prefer they didn't have them so you can certainly go with a less

offending rice crispies or corn flakes like the ones from WF. Whole

grains are more allergenic than processed grains so he prefers

processed grains to reduce reaction.

I'm actually going to be talking to him about diet next week at our

appointment. I got a call today saying that rice, rice milk, soy

smoothies and pancakes were not okay after sending in our food diary

1.5 weeks ago and I don't really understand that. I don't understand

why soy yogurt and soy milk are okay but soy smoothies aren't -

especially since it's not berry or tropical fruit flavored. So I'm

pretty confused. And last week pancakes were okay but for whatever

reason, today they aren't. So I don't know. I think he's going to

find it hard for many of us to follow a diet when we don't know the

rules and the rules keep changing from week to week! :) The diet is

so loosely written that I don't know what's okay and what's not. The

only thing I know for sure is no dairy. I even specifically asked

the girls in the office if we were supposed to go full on casein free

and they really had no clue what I was talking about. They just kept

repeating no dairy. But then there are things with dairy, casein or

whey that are okay. So I have no idea. I've just stuck to no

cheese, no milk, no ice cream - the obviously dairy stuff - and no

goldfish or any type of cracker/chip with cheese flavoring.

I definitely need clarification, myself, so I'm certainly not one

that can be trusted to explain anything! :)

Cheryl,

If you happen to call the office and Lauri (Lori?) is there, she is probably

the one there who can best answer your questions (other than Dr. G, of

course). Many of the others in the office are relatively new. She worked

for Dr. G for years, then quit to be home with her daughter, but she is

coming back to work for him part time.

Do you known when Lauri will be at the office? I'm SO

Laurie is in the office Tuesdays and Thursdays

Re cereals and diet....remember every child reacts differently to different

foods. Whole wheat and similar are more difficult to digest and some kids are

more reactive to that than to more processed gluten products. Brown rice is

another. Dr G might allow something for a while to see if the immune system is

improving - if not he might target other possible offending foods. The child may

not actually be 'allergic' in the true sense of the the word - but his/her

immune system reacts or 'thinks' they are allergic - this is why its so tricky

getting diet cleaned up - and what is true for one child, may not be for

another.
