Guest guest
Hi Kavita, I've heard this about chewing ice... pickle cravings too! As a child I always wanted to chew ice and loved sour pickles. I am often borderline anemic. It may be an old wives tale, but my experience says that there could be some truth to it too. I found several websites that connect ice-chewing a anemia. http://kevinmd.com/blog/2004/11/i-eat-lot-of-ice.html April Re: Ice Chewing My three yr old like to bite into ice more so than ever. Is this some kind of deficiency. I was told low iron is that true. rgds Kavita

Guest guest
I'm a life-long ice cruncher. A 10-lb bag lasts me a few days + all ice produced in my ice-maker. LOL. It is definitely significantly worse when I'm anemic which can be often. It's also a sensory craving. But it is also a symptom of OCD as well. Of course, I believe OCD is absolutely immune related, and I think anemia in our kids is mostly related to chronic infection or immune dysregulation anyway, so the anemia relationship to ice crunching could still point back to the immune system. Definitely have iron checked - ferriten also if CBC doesn't show it yet. Even if it doesn't show anemia right now, not bad to have a baseline for later. The fact that I had a starting baseline at the beginning of my PANDAS and the steady decline in my iron then a response when I was on meds is the ONLY thing that has helped me get any medical care for PANDAS when no one here believes in it. It's the only proof I have that I've had a chronic infection. Anway, anemia - yes, big cause. You can include sub-optimal levels of B12 in there too I think. OCD is the other possibility, so watch out for other related symptoms including anxiety and restless leg.
