Sorry - But because we’ve never done this therapy I don’t know much about

it.

Is ABA and ABM basically the same?

Katy,

Feldenkrais therapist apply pressure to muscles and joints that send

messages

to his brain because his brain doesn't send messages to his body like it

should. She works with Sawyer during play and he loves it! He loves her too.

I found the therapist by google search, I typed in " Feldenkrais and the city

and

state I live in " and a ton of therapist came up.

Sawyer has cerebral palsy as well as bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria,

he is

2 1/2 and he doesn't walk or talk. He signs for communication.

As for paying for the therapy, I have gone back to work part time to help

pay

for Sawyer's therapies. It's worth every penny. Hope this helps!

Kristie

Hello everyone,

I was just curious if anyone has ever tried ABA therapy. I know it is used a

lot with children on the autism spectrum but I haven't heard if it is also

useful with other special needs such as Polymicrogyria. Any input and

experience would be appreciated. It is expensive and I would just like some

personal experiences if there are any out there to help me decide if it

would be worth it. Although anything is worth a try right? Has anyone tried

any other type of therapies that have shown good results?

Thanks, Jodi

Hello,

In short ABA and ABM or not the same thing. They both treat different things.

ABA is used to change and teach different behaviors amongst other things and ABM

i believe is actually based off of feldenkrais so it is very similar to that

type of therapy. It has to do with teaching the body to move. If you google each

therapy you will get a much better description than I am giving;) I am going to

start ABA with my daughter next month in hopes of changing some behaviors and

learning new ones that will help her become more independent. As well as

increase her communication skills as she is nonverbal but learning to use her

ipad. We will be having a therapist come to our house 3 times a week for 2.5 to

3 hours each day. And they will train me to do the program on the other days.

Unfortunately neither I am going to be paying for it out of pocket. She gets

therapy through our states early intervention but it is not near as intensive as

this. And we are applying for grants to help pay for it now. When she turns 3

and goes into head start preschool I am going to try and get the school district

to help pay for it but that will be quite the fight I am told. But i know of

kids who do get ABA and the district pays for it so it's worth pushing for.

Insurance in my state doesn't have to cover this type of therapy either yet.

And they will train me to do the program on the other days.

ok - thanks for the info. I'm thinking of bringing this up at the next meeting

with the school.

Unfortunately neither I am going to be paying for it out of pocket. She

gets therapy through our states early intervention but it is not near as

intensive as this. And we are applying for grants to help pay for it now. When

she turns 3 and goes into head start preschool I am going to try and get the

school district to help pay for it but that will be quite the fight I am told.

But i know of kids who do get ABA and the district pays for it so it's worth

pushing for. Insurance in my state doesn't have to cover this type of therapy

either yet.
