hi,

My 15 yr old missed 55 days of school last year de to illness and flunked

algebra even though she turned in missed assuagements. She ended up in summer

school. I can't even get a 504 for her. My 8 yr old has been denied an fm

trainer for her central auditory processing disorder.

The 8 yr olds teacher knows she has Aspergers and docked her points because

of lack of eye contact. Everyone knows eye contact is hard for these kids.

Hamilton southeastern has no deaf, blind, or mentally handicap kids. They

are either at the deaf school, blind school or at the early childhood class

which is available at only one intermediate school. And they are not permitted

to interact with the " regular " kids.

Oh my goodness... I think that it is time for you to write your congress man or

woman. You would not believe the replies that I received. Fax or send them

e-mail entitled " A Child Left Behind! " I would also point out that not only is

the school liable for the behavior of educators but the teacher can be

personally held liable and in my opinion docking a child for something like eye

contact when there is a valid reason is wrong and is hurting the child's self

esteem and lets face it self esteem is a tough one for many of our kids

especially when they are high functioning.

I know that this will not make you feel better but sadly I have this argument

yearly with educators about my son and his special need is legal blindness and

yes they attempt to mark off for not maintaining eye contact during speeches.

For some teachers it is a gentle reminder and for others it is a battle of the

wills. Well my will is greater and the law is on my side in this matter and I

quickly point that out.

Document everything that happens to your children. Buy a copy of slaw:

Special Education Law By D. Write and Pamela Darr- and highlight

area's that pertain to your children. I honestly can not see how they can not

provide a child with Aspergers an IEP. Please enlighten me if I am wrong in

saying this....it seems to me that the districts who are not doing this are not

doing their jobs and maybe we need to band together and see to it that they do.

Have you called Disability Law in your state to find out if they can help you?

I'm in the process of getting a letter from our Dr. stating my son has a

neuro-immune dysfuntion disorder/asthma and misses many school days

because of this but will make up missed work. Supposedly they can't

threaten us with their letters if I get this letter to the school. It's

all about money. They get money for how many kids are there each day. If

you can do this and also write in for planned leave of absences, which I

have had to do, they don't bug you so much because they still get there

money. Jerri

Jerri,

They may also have to provide you with in-home schooling, too.

Both of my siblings had long-term illnesses, my brother during elementary

and my sister during high school. Both had a tutor/teacher come to our home

on a periodic basis to help them with their schoolwork. This was in CA.
