We experience things like this but Nisha is not that old so I am sure it will

get worse. Have you had a good neuropsy eval? Someone that works with kids with

strokes? I am in this other listserve from CHASA and they have this discussion

often. I believe she needs a different approach that she will " get " .

Hi all,

My daughter (who will turn 9 in March) was diagnosed with PMG two years

ago. Her PMG is right hemisphere only so she has weakness with fine

motor skills on left and partial seizures (now controlled with seizure

meds.) My question is this: does anyone else with unilateral PMG have

uneven learning/intelligence? She struggles with math regrouping for

example and can't seem to learn this concept (we've been working on it

since last year) -she will learn it one day but she doesn't retain what

she's learned Yet, she can remember other facts (i.e. social studies,

things she learned from reading a book, etcetera) and she has not had

any breakthrough seizures in the last year so it does not seem to be a

universal problem with taking in new information, just in certain

subjects. Has anyone else that has experience with unilateral PMG had

this issue?

Thanks,

(Mother of Eva)

Good question...we actually had a battery of tests for learning

disabilities done last year over a few months' time (paid for by the

school district fortunately) which yielded very little to show she was

learning disabled - hopeful and frustrating at the same time. Yet, in

spite of progressing in other areas of study, she has not progressed

with her math skills in a year's time in spite of regular engagement, a

new school, as well as new learning methods. I am not sure if

neuropsych testing would be the same as or different than what was

recently done last spring but it probably wouldn't hurt to look into it.

My daughter is 14 with LEFT hemisphere PMG. Same

Issues as your daughter - except the epilepsy became out of control at 11.

She has the OPPOSITE learning issues. She struggles with social studies and

English, but excels in science and math. Go figure. Left rain / right brain??

We did neuropsych testing and it told us a LOT. Like she learns better orally

than reading it. Little things like that. Spatial awareness is a challenge. It

really helped us a lot.
