Guest guest
Hi Theresa, I am relieved to hear that Ellen did so well on her cruise. Her attitude was very 'teenager' - arent you relieved?! Re: the mole, I, personally, would wait for her to mention it, and then give her the answer, matter of fact, no emotion in your voice. Let her see it as it is, something to watch. You are right about having so much anxiety now, and being relaxed from the trip. You dont need to take on the extra worry of feeling that you'll cause her to feel more anxious. am I making any sense? I hope that Ellen's summer, and yours, continues with the same success! take care, wendy in canada

Guest guest
I haven't but my husband and I have been looking up disney cruises and want to go on one also. We also aren't sure how that would be handled. I know my sister and her husband went and they (the cruise line employees)took their (normal--hate that word) kids all the time to an area that had arcades and everything else, but not sure they could do that with our son???? Cheryl mom of Cameron 3q deletion, SID, Apraxia [ ] cruise Silly question but has anyone taken there apraxia child on cruise? Any dos or donts? I got him a sterling silver id bracelet(with our names on back) also have the shoe tags. Am nervous if they will take him in the " child care " thing or provide babysitters if we want to go to a show or enjoy a formal meal. I am prepared to accept no, and watch him like a hawk. Any ideas would be appreciated. We are going from ny to Bermuda on Celebrity line. Once again, sorry for kind of odd inquiry. Thanks, Lori J. Guest guest
Hope you enjoy your trip (boy am I jealous!) A psych friend of mine once told me " If you ever went on vacation with YOUR kids, you'd come home on a stretcher " ....thus, we've not left " home " in 16 years..... Only suggestion I could give, is to possibly get as much information about the " childcare " situation prior to going. It may turn out to be a great situation for both YOU and your child. The more you know ahead of time, usually the more prepared you are. Hope you have a wonderful trip! ~K [ ] cruise Silly question but has anyone taken there apraxia child on cruise? Any dos or donts? Guest guest
Lori, It will probably be up to you. If you think he can blend in a child care situation without being frustrated then by all means do it. Maybe put him in a younger class and peek on him frequently the first day to see if he is having fun. They can page you if he is upset or whatever. In terms of a show or meal why would they turn you away? In my book that would be discrimination! Maybe get him the bracelet for sea sickness if he has sensory issues. I always wondered if that would effect my son in terms of balance, etc... denise > Silly question but has anyone taken there apraxia child on cruise? Any dos or donts? Guest guest
We are going on a Disney cruise on December w/ a neighbor and her young son. I plan on leaving both my kids in the kids club for several hours each day; I think my apraxic son Ben will do OK...he enjoys groups of children, can follow directions, doesn't have difficulty separating from me, and plus he will have his sister as well as our neighbor's son to play with. He will wear his shoe tag. I don't think they will understand much of what he says out of context, but some things I think he can express sufficiently-- potty, eat, etc. Plus maybe his sister can help translate if necessary. I have heard very good things about the Disney lines and their kids clubs; I haven't heard anything about Celebrity lines..... If you check out some of the various cruise lists etc you can often find some discussion about people who have taken their 'disabled' children along and read about their experiences. -Lis, Brittany and At 11:35 PM 8/15/2003, you wrote: >Silly question but has anyone taken there apraxia child on cruise? Guest guest
Lis, wanted to reply after cruise. It was great. All had a good time and no one got sick. cried at the child group and hubby wouldn't leave. That was ok. Older son went a few nights. And we had late dinner with a table with a semi circle couch chair. was out before appetizers. Got in room sitting for a few nights. Enjoy yours. Sylvie I lived less than a mile from the ocean for the first 20 yrs of my cfs. Now I'm in the high desert. It doesn't matter where I'm at, I have cfs. Maybe is right about mold and CFS. I grew up in so many old wooden homes and I am sure mold was all over. Now you are in the high desert. Is the humidity low there? I also have problems with Cedars and I think that if I were to moved to Colorado, the cedars would bother me. I heard it flooded somewhere in Oregon today. Maybe is right about mold and CFS. I grew up in so many old wooden homes and I am sure mold was all over. I would think steel would have even more mold since it would be much more 'airtight' than wood. Now you are in the high desert. Is the humidity low there? The humidity where I am is usually VERY low. We only average about 8in of precipitation a year. Yes, parts of Oregon are flooding all over the place lately, torrential rains on the other side of the cascade mtn range from us. Its a mess, feel sorry for them, used to be there. Guest guest
In '99 I was introduced to a divorced professional who had a large yacht in Santa Cruz. He described how he met the greatest, most perfect lady and they got married, and shortly after she moved on board this beautiful boat, she started to turn into the most miserable witch. Tired, depressed, strange illnesses, stomach problems, wild mood swings, anxiety and insomnia, and the doctors just couldn't help. She just kept getting worse and worse until she was basically bedbound, and the fun, outgoing, wonderful person he married was nothing more than a memory - replaced by a miserable Hag from Hell. And all the doctors could come up with was that she was mentally disordered, but their counseling and " therapy " made no difference either. Finally she was diagnosed with CFS, but, of course, all that does is make you lose your health insurance and get a mocking laugh out of your former friends. They, or maybe " he " since he couldn't take it anymore, decided to go their separate ways, and since this lady was incapable of taking care of herself, she moved in with relatives. And slowly... bit by bit, ever so gradually, she started to get better. They kept in some contact, and he said that even though she is still fairly ill, her personality is almost back to the way it was. He blamed their failed relationship on some strange fault of their personalities being incompatible, causing stress. He thought that maybe he was just too difficult to put up with. After all - it was pretty apparent that the problem was HIM. Why, as soon they separated, it seemed to set her on the road to recovery. What more proof do you need than that? He was really startled by how profound the change had been, both at the beginning when she fell apart after moving in, and how much for the better after they were apart, and her health had seemed so hopeless all this time, but it just reinforced how much of mistake it was for them to have been together. I stepped on board, and the damn yacht was an absolute mold nightmare. I turned around and got off the boat as quickly as I could, this thing was a killer for us genetically susceptible " mold responder " types. So I gave him the whole run-down on Stachybotrys and neurotoxicity from Trichothecenes, and he was amazed. Amazed to find out that there really was an explanation that fit the facts - and amazed that none of the doctors knew anything about it. I said " Now that you know, and as long as she isn't exposed to mold, she'll likely stay the person she is. " But he replied, " No. There's no going back after the way our lives turned to Hell. It was just too much. I couldn't take that chance " More lives turned to total crap by mold. Their dream of boating adventure turned into the " cruise from Hell " . What a waste. -
Guest guest
Here is a link for a Cruise for kids and families with disabilities. It would be great to go somewhere where no one stared, got upset at meltdowns or questioned your parenting skills.
