Guest guest
Anyone else's child do this? My daughter (5 yrs. old) did this about a year and a half ago, but it stopped. She was going regularly until about three months ago when she started back up again. She's been withholding her BM's for 3-4 days. Previously, she could withhold them for a week. I don't want it to get to that point again. She has to poop (she'll bend over and start running through the house to hold it in), I'll tell her to go to the bathroom, she'll go (begrudingly) sit there crying and holding it in and will NOT go. I'm at my wits end. It is NOT constipation, which she had several years ago. She takes enzymes, probiotics, Flax Oil containing 15% flaxseed fiber, Vit. C., along with a myriad of other supplements. Her body signals that she needs to go but she refuses. She has extreme anxieties, which I feel is triggering her present need to withhold. I beg, plead, offer treats, rewards, threaten, etc. etc. Nothing works. She will sit there for an hour and keep it in. I am at a point where I want to just slack off and let her work through it, but I am so afraid that her body will reabsorb the toxins that we are working to get rid of. What are your thoughts? Any suggestions, advice? Karmen

Guest guest
My NT daughter, now 20 yrs old, went through a of this at age 4. I vividly remember it! It was a nightmare and I know constipation wasn't an issue. She, too, had some anxiety issues as well as some ocd behaviors. Sometimes good old fashioned bribery would do it, but more often I'd resort to distraction. Eventually we made up an ongoing, interactive story about animals (that we named)and their life in a jungle. Everytime she'd go in the bathroom, I'd sit on the edge of the tub and we'd pick up the story where we left off. There was alot of action in our stories, we'd actually get loud in there feeding off each other and she'd often totally forget about things and just go. When she did I'd make no fuss about it, we'd just continue the story and wind up the chapter a minute or two after she finished. Afterward I'd tell her how proud I was of her. Next time we'd pick up where we left off. It was very effective at engaging her and drawing her attention away from something that was, at the time, frightening to her. She outgrew it. A year later a little girl across the street did the same thing at age 5, her Mom did the story trick and it helped take the edge off things for them too. Hope that offers a little bit of help.
