Guest guest
Katy, My granddaughter Lindsey, who is 10 years old, does not have visual impairment. Although she has various other limitations including seizures. She can't even hold a crayon due to spasticity in her hands and arms. She can though, isolate her little index finger. Her parents got her the ipad for Christmas. Oh my goodness what she can do with that index finger on that thing!! I'm in awe every time I watch her navigate it. She flips through that thing like a pro! It is everything to her. Lindsey is non verbal so speech therapy is teaching her with many useful communication applications. Lindsey can't walk, talk, or really eat from a spoon but she sure can tell you what she wants with this new technology.  I'm sorry I can't really comment on the visual impairment thing but in our case it is priceless.  Hope this helps somewhat. Blessings,  Bonnie (grandmother to Lindsey, 10 years old) >________________________________ > >To: polymicrogyria >Sent: Friday, March 9, 2012 3:40 PM >Subject: ipad for children with visual impairement > > > >Hi all > >This morning we had a great VI therapy session. Guest guest
16 yr old son with CVI and PMG uses the ipad sometimes. He likes the apps directed to toddlers and children with autism. Jenna had a cortical resection in Dec to remove a quarter of her brain (the biggest pmg bit). Since then she still has seizures but her quality of life has improved and her awake time now is double. She has changed and developed so much since the surgery. Prior to it she showed only some light recognition. Now she's tracking objects with her good right eye (nothing in left). I asked if it was time for us to look at some serious sensory toys (bubble tube/ switches etc) to help her development (we were given some charity funding). She said Jenna was probably past that stage as she's more active (sitting and rolling when she wants) and that we should get an ipad. I couldn't believe it. She said she's expect Jenna to get some use from it with her current vision and it would grow with her and be a great portable activity. So here I am asking the people who I think know the most about our children. Do any of you have any experience of ipads for children with pmg and visual impairements? Please forgive my long explanation :-) Thank you Katy (mummy to Jenna, 17 months, PMG, VI, low tone CP, global dev delay and the most delightful person ever!) _____ No virus found in this message.
