Guest guest
Hi ann, when my daughter went through this phase we thought it was a combination of sensory issues and an avoidance tactic. It was worse when she had a cold. We tried putting vinagrette dressing on her fingers ,which helped somewhat. Then we switched to peanut butter, which also helped. School staff followed through with this. She occasionally still does this but it has definately decreased. She didnt do it constantly but enough that it was a problem during ABA sessions and unstructured activities. Guest guest
use a humidifier in his room at night. You can also spray saline water in his nose to moisturize. incessant nose picking is sometimes a symptom of worms, such as pinworms, if he's scratching his behind it's worthwhile to check for worms. I don't have any behavioral suggestions, doesn't your ABA therapist have any ideas? At that age my son started rubbing his nose until he rubbed it literally every other second. I realized it must be allergy related and started from a scratchy feeling in his nose but escalated almost to a tic. I took him completely off dairy and it stopped. Guest guest
Hi ann. That's a toughy. My daughter is almost 8, and up until recently " picked " her nose. Redirection rarely worked. I believe for her it was a sensory issue and definitely was worse when she was anxious. I don't have any ideas for you...maturation pretty much took care of the issue for us. Good luck.. Guest guest
Hi Ann, I just went through this with my 7 y/o son. He picks his nose for several reasons. One is that he has allergies and his nose feels irritated because it gets alternately dry and stuffed up. He frequently will pick at his nose and skin out of boredom/habit,as well. He also picks his nose when his anxiety levels are up. He will do it until it is bleeding constantly, usually with other skin picking, as a form of self-injurious behavior. Some solutions offered by my pediatrician are to put a light coating of vaseline in his nose, try saline drops, use a humidifier in his room, constantly be on the look out to redirect/distract, and, if all else fails, offer a reward/exchange like: no nose picking for two days gets him a small ice cream sundae, matchbox car, penny, or whatever you want to bribe him with. Gradually extend the time he has to not pick to get the reward and, eventually, he is supposed to " forget " the habit and stop picking. Hope these help, Vicci > Hi, > > I'm new to the list. Guest guest
Try using a Neti pot every morning and evening (as important as brushing teeth). Be sure to use natural sea salt. Will do wonders for sinuses & virtually eliminate the " need " to pick nose. My little one does this constantly and seems distressed, although the doctor has checked his nose and it's fine. Pinworms was also discussed, and I'll have that checked out. But he's been so yeasty I'm wondering if this may be part of it?? My eldest does this alot too, but I thought it was a sort of obsessive thing and hadn't ever related it to digestive problems before. Thank you for your help, __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi Sue, We had this problem in the past as well. My son has gotten over it in the past year... He is 10 now...... I have caught him on occasion picking recently but he never does it at school anymore or in public places..... Lets face it all of us have something that needs to be removed from time to time....LOL.... But seriously it was really hard getting him to stop.... I hate to say this but it was ridicule from classmates that made him stop. I felt bad for him on one hand but was glad to see him stop on the other.... If he picks when he is alone on occasion fine.... so long as he washes his hands afterwards which I remind him to do often and which he seems to be picking up pretty well now..... I also gave my son a little pack of tissues to keep in his pocket to encourage him to use those instead of picking... It did help.... Just keep reminding him.... Stay on it and it should pass.... Good Luck!!!!! Remember, plenty of NT kids do this as well.... in Lancaster, Cajrsuellen1952 <jrsuellen1952@...> wrote: My 7 year old son has a problem picking and eating it.I am looking for social story or a book that will helpThanksSue__________________________________________________

Guest guest
Hello Sue. Sounds like you have a typical problem, which most kids do. I've caught my kids doing this before. There actually is a childrens book you can get, It's called "The holes in your nose" by Taro Gomi. It tells all about how your nose works and about boogers and why you shouldn't pick your nose and how dirty boogers are and even talks about nose bleeds. Another book by this author is "Everyone Poops". The books are educating and easy enough for a small child to read. My kids have had these books for years, and they find them, comical as well as educating. Give em a try. jrsuellen1952 <jrsuellen1952@...> wrote: My 7 year old son has a problem picking and eating it.I am looking for social story or a book that will helpThanksSue

Guest guest
Rhonda- If you are sure it is the salty taste that he likes, can you find a substitute? I would also wonder if it is related to the sensation of there being something annoying in his nose. As someone who gets dried up nose, I can tell you it is very annoying to have that stuff in your nose--I cannot imagine how frustrating it must make a person who has any sensory issues. And, once you pick it and have a " scab " there, it's more dried up stuff there to annoy you. I worked with a family who used A & D ointment--I think they were putting it there after he was asleep with a Q-tip. My sister also tried it with her NT son. She also used OCEAN (saline water) drops which helped dry it up and get rid of it I guess. I think you are right that you need to give him replacement activities to do with his hands...but know how hard it is to keep that up 24/7.... I'll be interested in any other ideas people have ann On 5/24/07, Rhoda Boyd <rboyd@...> wrote: > > Hi everyone! Guest guest
I wonder too if it is a " something " in there. My daughter (nt) used to have nose bleeds and the ENT told us it was because of the inflammation of the veins in the nose caused by allergy and any little swipe would cause a nose bleed. But I bet your son hnow has a sore in there. Something else that comes to mind, and it is related to another one of my posts. But my son would constantly pick at his fingernails and when those were gone he started on his toenails. And he would pick at them until they would bleed. This has disappeared with antibiotic treatment and I am presuming this is an OCD type behavior that has subsided now. > > Hi everyone! I can say " Quiet hands " and he will stop, but he just can't help himself going back up there within 30 seconds of my telling him that. I try to keep his hands busy with other things as much as possible and distract him with other activities, but I can't keep that up 24/7 and so he eventually goes back for more nose picking. Guest guest
Dr G did prescribe the antibiotic. We kept insisting to him that he brightens up, has more energy, and is less irritable when on an antibiotic. We trialed it and the results are all good, and the nailbiting thing went away at the same time. I bet someone else knows all of the whys to this. > > > > > > Hi everyone!
