why would you switch?

Hi ,

Is your son also on Tenex along with the SSRI? While my son was on

Prozac, instead of increasing it, Dr. G reduced his Tenex, and the

results were amazing.

Hi Donna....thanks for this piece of info.....tell me.....what

reasons/symptoms for the decrease in Tenex? I have wondered about

this as well.

He is currnetly on 1/2 in am and 1/4 in pm ... has been on this

level since October.

His neurospect showed no deep hyperfusion.

What dose Prozac is your son on?

Thanks

Our son is doing well on Prozac and the only other one that really helped

with him was Paxil.

If you have to switch, Paxil might be worth a try.

Good luck,

Hi ,

I'm glad this was helpful...he's actually not on prozac anymore; we

eventually switched to Celexa in September; it's a better fit for him.

Still, he did pretty well on Prozac. His dose was 7.5 mg (3/4 of a

10 mg. tablet) and he was taking the same dose of Tenex your son is

taking now. Dr. G had wanted to raise the Prozac a bit, but in the

past he had talked about possibly *increasing* the Tenex, and I asked

about that and mentioned how incredible the improvements had been with

Tenex. I was hoping he would increase it. Dr. Goldberg said, " Well,

now that you're telling me this... " and he looked over 's chart,

and said " I think the right move now might be to *decrease* the Tenex

and see how he does. It might be that, because his brain is

continually changing and improving, he just doesn't need as much Tenex

as he used to. " So started taking 1/4 in the morning and 1/4 at

night. I didn't have a whole lot of faith that it would work...but

WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I don't want to say this will be your experience,

but it totally helped in my son's case.

As an aside, six weeks later, we tried reducing the Tenex again, but

the results were negative. So we're at 1/4 and 1/4 per day.

Hope that helps!

Donna

Nevertheless, when he was on Prozac and it was clear

Hi Charmian,

As I understand it from what Dr. Goldberg has said, as the children's brains

mature and evolve, their needs change, thus making switching SSRIs

important... you want to make sure your child is on the one that is the best

fit for that point in their development. That said, switching SSRIs has

always been the most stressful point in our older son's treatment... but

when we found one that helped him, it helped a LOT.

My oldest guy (now 16)does great on Prozac. He did okay originally

(way back when)on Paxil until it went beyond the first initial

increase (from 5mg to 10mg)it made him out of his mind. Zoloft was

very frightening (he was emotionally breaking down constantly),

Effexor did not fit either.

You know what has been magic? its been Prozac 1 & 3/4 of 10mg tab

(he's 5ft 8inches tall, 195lbs), Wellbutrin 1 & 1/4 of 100mg tab,

plus 1/4 of 1mg of tennex.

He has been on that for the last 1 plus year, and he's is at the top

of his class academically and he feels so wonderful about himself,

and he has matured into such a nice, calm, loving young man.....

Stick with the prozac, maybe add a little wellbutrin, plus tennex if

your guy is chemically like my 16yr old. Stick with the winners!

Just keep tweeking until you get the right combo.

(I just wish we could figure out the 14yr old, he has us all

stumped!)

Thanks , I remember Dr G mentioning Wellbutrin to us. And he

is on Tenex already.

....

your comments about lowering the dose of Zoloft and seeing better

things really hit home. We have been wondering that exact thing.

Just 2 days ago Donna mentioned that they lowered the Tenex dose and

saw really good results. I mentioned this in an update to Dr G, and

he agreed it would be a good thing for us to try (THANKS again

Donna!)....guess what? Immediate results....he was having trouble

with word retrieval, and that was back, he was listless and now he

has a bounce in his step. I have to wonder about the same theory

with SSRI....maybe he just doesn't need as much?

I will need to bring this up next week in our phone consult.
