Guest guest
Hi , My son has been on an antifungal with an antiviral since he was 3. He just turned 5. He started on Valtrex and Nizoral, then switched to Famvir and Diflucan. To answer your other question about Diflucan...I recently treated myself very effectively for yeast with FlorEssence 'tea' and Solaray " Yeast Cleanse " capsules in lieu of prescription meds, but I'm learning I need to stay away from my favorite yeast-causing foods to maintain it ;-( I'm glad you're feeling mostly better. My girlfriend went through the same thing as you (ruptured appendix that got infected) last summer, but she was pregnant at the time! She delivered a healthy baby boy (about a month early) in January. Hang in there! Kristy Used, Anti-fungals and Anti-Virals together?? I was curious if any mothers, or anyone on the site has ever been put on maintenance dose of Anti-Fungals and Anti-Virals together as a 'co-treatment?' I've never heard it talked about much; and I'm wondering if it is considered safe for maintenance treatment if BOTH are a problem the person or child is dealing with?? Anyone ever heard? I'm curious because both have been discussed as problems and I've not seen or heard Dr. G really talk about both in terms of co-usage... Such as Nizoral and Favmir? Would the doses just be lowered- I'm going to talk about my blood tests with my doctor; but anyone have any good information? Or personal experience? - [:-/]
Guest guest
What a small world; that is exactly what I took in the time span before I could get in to talk with a doctor about the use of any antifungal medications... I bought " Yeast Cleanse " from Solaray as well. I honestly think it might have helped quite a bit; I looked up all the ingredients and they all seem to be quite medically backed, especially the first ingredient listed up at the top (I forget what it is.) I looked them up on PubMed.com; they had some good things to say about the items used in Yeast Cleanse. (The guys at the supplement store just looked at me odd for buying something from the 'women' section, lol :-) Oh well I guess-rather be healthy than look 'cool.' -What is your favorite 'yeast causing food?' I've had to really 'tighten the restrictions' on my diet more than before the surgery-little to no fruit and nothing to drink but water. -You said your son has been on Valtrex and Nizoral, then Famvir and Diflucan for about 2 years? How is he doing; seen some good improvements from it? Thanks for the information Kristy- OH, how have your son's Liver enzymes been the entire time, and what dose has he been using as a 'combo?' I'm curious about mentioning it with my doctor, main concern is 'toxicity.' He on any other meds/drugs besides the two? My thoughts are they would likely put me on Nizoral [antifungal] and, ZOVIRAX-a.k.a.-ZOVIR (Acyclovir or Aciclovir)-generic, [antiviral]... Anyone used the two? - > > Hi , > > My son has been on an antifungal with an antiviral since he was 3. He just > turned 5. Guest guest
Dr G consistently uses antivirals, antifungals and (when needed) antibiotics to help out the immune system. > > I was curious if any mothers, or anyone on the site has ever been put on > maintenance dose of Anti-Fungals and Anti-Virals together as a > 'co-treatment?' > > I've never heard it talked about much; and I'm wondering if it is > considered safe for maintenance treatment if BOTH are a problem the > person or child is dealing with?? > > Anyone ever heard? Guest guest
Hi - The meds are used together, just started at different times. The doses are done at therapeutic doses, not reducing those doses. In fact, the doses are typically higher than what you'd get for 'maintenance'. Lowering doses (or doing intermittent tx) from prime therapeutic dose increases the risk of building resistance to those meds. Stopping and starting is not a good idea. When switching the meds, there isn't a rest period in between. " Rest periods " are not needed. Regular liver monitoring is needed, but there has not been a high incidence of liver problems resulting from these meds. I think once he said he had had to remove 2 patients from antifungals after monitoring for a long time ... that's since like 1999. In fact, I believe it's more common for mildly elevated liver enzymes to go down when starting these 'liver toxic' meds than it is for them to go up. It certainly was that way w/my kids. My local unsupportive pediatrician was livid that they were being started on Diflucan at 100mg per day when they had slightly elevated liver enzymes (just barely over the range which most peds still call a normal result for some reason). When I mentioned that to Dr G, he said don't worry - the levels will probably go down pretty quickly once they get on these meds, that it was elevated due to chronic infection and would respond well to the meds (not exact quote). And they did. I recently challenged my local doc w/my own treatment, and of course they went down, and went back up when the treatment was stopped. One protection on the liver issues is to start the med slowly and reach full dose over a week or two or month .... cannot remember that detail so well. This reduces the level of die-off as opposed to double dose first and stepping back to maintenance dose like is typically done w/diflucan. Perhaps it's the massive die-off all at one time that clogs the liver w/toxins that contributes to hepatic reactions? I dunno. Antivirals are started that way too if I remember- I don't think for the purpose of protecting the liver but just reducing the die-off reaction that can make one feel soooo yucky. I don't believe there is any specific 'match-up' as to 'this antifungal' with 'this antiviral'. Guest guest
wrote.... " Perhaps it's the massive die-off all at one time that clogs the liver w/toxins that contributes to hepatic reactions? " , I have wondered this exact thing too. Recently, Liver enzymes became elevated after we reduced the antiviral to a lower doseage. We increased the antiviral and the liver counts normalized. > > > I was curious if any mothers, or anyone on the site > > has ever been put on > > maintenance dose of Anti-Fungals and Anti-Virals > > together as a > > 'co-treatment?' > > > > I've never heard it talked about much; and I'm > > wondering if it is > > considered safe for maintenance treatment if BOTH > > are a problem the > > person or child is dealing with?? > > > > Anyone ever heard?
