Trash it, as there is nothing identifying

clinical HIPPA info on the envelope.

Shredding patient envelopes

What do most of you do with envelopes from patient payments?

They generally

have a return address for the patient that was written or stamped on the

envelope.

No Clinic

name on the envelope , but the envelope would be in

the clinic trash – not hard to tell whose trash it is.

Is this HIPAA

material? Or just trash?

If we were

STD’s R Us Clinic – I suppose it could be a big deal to find a

patient name in the trash.

Safest thing is to

just shred it, I suppose.

Thoughts?

I shred them. Identifying whose trash it came from is easy. Why not just pop it into the shredder? I shred everything with anyone's name on it. Then again, in this office, we LOVE shredding. We have a micro shredder. Shredding everything removes all thought and worry about "to shred or not to shred?".
