Guest guest
Hi Patty,I believe there are a few of us in this group whose children have had the surgery. My daughter, Riley, age 10 had the surgery about 3 years ago. She had her submandibular glands removed and her parotid glands ligated. She still has problems with drooling because she doesn't swallow in a timely way but the surgery definitely helped and we found it worth it. She is still on robinul which helps as well. We did notice that after the surgery her saliva is thicker. We had it done at s Hopkins.christina, mom to Riley, age 10, bilateral perisylvian syndrome To: polymicrogyria From: pattylockard@... Have any of your children/young adults had this procedure done? My son's dentist said that it might help. Let me know what you think. Guest guest
Hi Patty, Our son Micah, 3 years old BPP had his submandibular glands and parotid glands tied off this past November. It took about 4-5 weeks to see results and the surgery was a success. He went from 13-15 bibs a day, to 1 wrist band a day. The surgery took a little over an hour and we stayed over night for observation. The first 24 hours were painful but after about 5 days, he was back to normal (eating certain foods would make him sore). He had it done because he was at risk of aspiration because he drooled so much. Best of luck to you. - Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® Surgery for Drooling Hi everyone, My son might possibly have surgery to eliminate some drooling. Guest guest
Thanks. Wes has not aspirated, but with the VNS he has been drooling more causing some choking where he can't catch his breath. He uses scarves during the day. Everyone says he looks like a cowboy. I think he would only get the salivary glands under his chin area. Guest guest
Have you discussed what type of procedure would be done with his ENT? There are all types. I do know that if they did the glands under his chin, they would leave the incisions open (that's what I was told at least). And the Scarves are a great idea! -allison Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® Surgery for Drooling > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > My son might possibly have surgery to eliminate some drooling. Guest guest
Hi Patty, Sorry I am late to reply to this thread. did have 2 surgeries for drooling a few years ago. The ENT wanted to be conservative, so she initially only took out his sublingual glands (tiny glands under the tongue) and rerouted his submandibular glands (two of the major glands) closer towards the back of the throat. We did not see a decrease in drooling with this approach. The following summer had one of the parotid glands ligated (tied-off) and the submandibular glands completely removed. We noticed a HUGE difference with this approach. still has plenty of saliva for eating, and will still drool on occassion- especially when hyper-focusing on a task or when extra congested due to a cold or allergies. I have to say this is one of the best decisions we made for . If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. best, Krista mom to , 8, BPP > > Hi everyone, > My son might possibly have surgery to eliminate some drooling.
