DIAGOSIS: AUTISM

The U.S. government recently announced that autism now occurs in

about 1 of every 150 American children. Yet this brain disorder,

which cripples the ability of a person to relate to the world around

them, remains a baffling mystery. It's also become a raging

controversy, with parent groups arguing with scientists over what

causes it, and with politicians over funding for research. Now, in

one potentially exciting development, researchers at the University

of California's MIND Institute in believe that if they can

accurately diagnose children early, they might actually be able to

intervene and change the way a child's brain develops. 60 MINUTES

will take a closer look at the subject in this week's show (Sunday,

Feb. 18, 7PM ET/PT on CBS).
