Hi,

Does anyone know if I can have the titers for rotavirus checked (I think that

is what pushed my son over the edge)? And if so, exactly what test to ask for?

And is rotavirus a true " Virus " like coxsacki (?sp)?

Thanks --

,

Rotavirus is a true virus, of the reovirus family. sackie virus is

an enterovirus. Most testing for rotavirus is done on stool and is only

positive during an acute infection. While it is possible to test for

IgG antibodies to rotavirus, I was unable to find a lab that does it.

Both Quest and Mayo, which are among the largest and most commonly used

reference laboratories in the US, do not run the test. No doubt there

are researchers scattered about the country who could do the test, but

it would take some doing to locate them. A problem you will then have

to contend with is how to interpret the results. Since most Americans

are exposed to Rotavirus by school age, a positive test will not be very

helpful in differentiating your son from millions of other children.

The level of the titer could theoretically do that, but without a

reference population the titer will probably be hard to evaluate.

Perhaps a rotavirus researcher could be of more help. If you would like

to pursue this further, and if you need help finding a researcher, let

me know.
