Be careful! Letters that this may lose us our freedom to buy supplements and

herbs. IMO they can be dangerous but prescription drugs kill more people and

they are prescribed by doctors. Aspirin has nearly killed me. (was in the

hospital for 3 days) In my case diet supplements are are very pure, no soy, no

corn, etc have done far more for my health then all the damaging drugs that

traditional docs have given me over the years like the big experiment: the birth

control pill, and how about HRT? how about all the antibiotics ? They

probably saved my life.....antibiotics since I had pneumonia so many times but I

also have other strange problems that may have been caused by them. I never

recovered from prednisone, how about that one?

If you want to read some real hard core truths..then read: Truedu " s

book! Also, how about Osler's Web? I prefer to make my own choices so watch

out!

A new source of data on adverse reactions to dietary supplements will soon

become available: in December, Congress passed a measure requiring the

manufacturers of dietary supplements and over-the-counter drugs to inform the

F.D.A.

whenever consumers call them with reports of serious adverse events. The bill

was signed by President Bush the day after Christmas. It

is a welcome acknowledgment that “natural†does not always mean “safe.â€

Dan Hurley is the author of the new book “Natural Causes: Death, Lies and

Politics in America’s Vitamin and Herbal Supplement Industry†(Broadway

Books), from which this essay is adapted.

Scientists at the Hopkins University School of Medicine say that a few

squares of chocolate a day can reduce the risk of a heart attack by almost 50

per cent in some cases.

You might consider doing a google search on him. Info-mercials are meant to

sell stuff. His backround is certainly an interesting read.

The post didn't say anything about stopping the availability of

supplements....just reporting adverse reactions. IMO, that is a positive

thing.

It's not that there aren't good over the counter products. We all have our

favorites. But why NOT be aware of adverse reactions?
