Jim,

I have lots of Acid Reflux problems and gas problems. I take a Prilosec in

the morning and at night. This seems to help, though I am not cured by any

means.

Hi Clyde;

I take Prevacid and will probably switch to Prilosec soon to save money.

I haven't received any letter from my insurance (United Healthcare)

regarding limitations. I hope not - I take Prevacid every day!

I have not gotten a letter. I was on Prevacid but it made me itch. I'm on

Protonix and my Gastro just gives it to me from his desk. I called the

pharmacy to inquire about it once as I wonder about its cost and they said

they didn't carry it at all.....

Interesting.

I have been on it since August, and it works wonders. Next year I may

have trouble getting it through insurance (I'd hate to pay for it out of

my pocket - it's expensive).

Hi Cylde;

I have been taking Previcid since August. I am thinking of switching to

Prilosec because my insurance will cover more of the cost.

Previcid costs me $25 per month, while Prilosec will cost $10 per month.

My doctor said they are the same drug, no difference.

If not for my insurance Previcid would cost me just over $100 per month!

expensive, but it works.

I must have skipped over this one but found it as I was going through old posts....I've been on Prilosec for about four years now and on the AP for a year and a half...I've made great progress on the AP myself....perhaps it is different for different people....

Tony

rheumatic prilosec

That's exactly what Austin's doctor said last week. "I'm glad Austin's not on prilosec because it counteracts the minocin." I don't know if that applies specifically to this class of antibiotic or to all antibiotics. If I remember, I'll ask him this week when I see him.

I just wrote someone about the fact that we are treating Austin's ulcer with whole leaf process aloe vera, and it is working quite well. You might talk with a professional person about trying aloe.

Jan

Someone told me (not from this group) thatprilosec which I am on for reflux/asthma, wasnot good to take with the AP - because it madethe minocin of no affect -- can someone help meout with this - if you know something about thiscombination. Hi ,

Prilosec also helped lesson my spasms. My Dr. suggested after several endo's that my acid reflux wasn't severe enough at the time to cause problems but enough to irate and weaken the "e" that ultimately lead to spasms.

Re: Prilosec

Hi Coopsmum and ,

I think that made some excellent points in responding to your inquiry regarding the timing of your swallowing symptoms and your taking Prilosec.

About Prilosec, and perhaps Notan could chime in on this one. Back in the early 1990's, after I had my open myotomy, the spasms were getting increasingly difficult to tolerate (I didn't know at the time that carbonation stopped my spasms in their tracks). My GI doctor prescribed Prilosec for me. Prilosec was well known, even then, to treat GERD. But. why should I be taking it if my problem was not acid reflux (especially having had a wrap performed). However, pain can be a great motivator, and I agreed to try it.

For the next 18 months I never had one spasm! Could I have possibly confused spasms with some kind of case of reflux or heartburn? Information came to my attention that being on these medications could over a long period of time could cause other problems. I was faced with the choice of "playing it safe" over the short term, in a sense, and continuing with Prilosec and not having spasms, or thinking more "long term" and stopping the Prilosec at the risk of the spasms returning. I decided to stop the Prilosec knowing that the spasms would return, and sure enough, within 6 months they were back to where they were 2 years earlier.

We've all heard different theories as to what causes the spasms. Just as "strange" are all the theories as to why certain things work to stop the spasms, and also that they work for some of us, but not others. My curiosity will always be, why did the prilosec work? Of course, drugs often do more than one thing to our bodies and not just what they were originally intended for (eg. nifedipine and minoxidil come to mind).

PS to . I'd trade you your scar any day for a better functioning esophagus (though at this point I can't complain).

Hi : You got the Prilosec because most Doctors stop thinking at GERD. You may have had had the increasing worsening problem for some time and you took action only when it had become more than you could handle. The first 20 years of my Achilasia was treated as GERD. Luckily a young intern, at my worst spasm and vomitting attack, at the emergency room ran the proper tests and here I still am. My GP is still saying he knew it was Achilasia all the time but we both know that he mis-diagnosed. I am now on Prevacid to inhibit reflux and Botox about every two years. At 75 I am too old for knives. All the best to everyone, Notan gets my salute as the mentor of you all (and me). He knows I spent two years living on chocolate and spagetti soup.

Prilosec. Within a month or two, I started having difficulty swallowing. I went back to the doc and he sent me for further evaluation - because of the new swallowing issue. That led to the Achalsia diagnosis. I questioned the Prilosec / difficulty swallowing thing and was told it was just coincidence. Did anyone's achalasia coincide with beginning a course of Prilosec? I had very occasional swallowing difficulties for a couple of years, but knew something was off. I was having the spasms (which I attributed to my heart), but had my heart checked and cleared. The cardiologist told me to start taking Prilosec. My general practitioner doctor prescribed the Prilosec, and within a month of starting it, I was throwing up every night. Within six weeks of starting it, I couldn't even swallow liquid. Just wondering if anyone else seemed to have their symptoms triggered by Prilosec (or Nexium).

When I first started taking Prilosec, I just had regular " heartburn "

(burning in my esophagus). After taking it for 2 weeks, I started

getting acid coming up into my throat and mouth all the time. I

always wondered if it was just a coincidence or whether the Prilosec

had something to do with it. I do know that when I am on high doses

of PPIs, my mouth and throat get so dry that I find it harder to

swallow. But the original dose of Prilosec was quite low and I

didn't notice dryness then. I guess we never know how our bodies

will react to these drugs.

I used to take Prilosec, but I didn't feel it was strong enough for my GERD. What kind of dose were you on? Have you tried other meds, such as Prevacid or Nexuim? Just wondering. It is strange how you started taking the Prilosec and then started having swallowing problems. Take care! sphm8888 <sphm8888@...> wrote: When I first started taking Prilosec, I just had regular "heartburn" (burning in my esophagus).
