How do you know if the long-term improvements your child makes are the result of , ABA, other interventions, a strong parental commitment to being " involved " with your child or just the result of your child developing/improving as he/she gets older? Rhoda, I think your question is a great one and one I constantly asked myself until a few things happened. One time when we moved, I forgot to have my son's Valtrex (antiviral) prescription refilled. I wasn't too concerned because I didn't think it did anything anyway. Within a week, I saw Autistic behaviors that I hadn't seen for over three years. I was so frightened that his body wouldn't come back and I had lost him for good. After getting him back on the Valtrex, he was himself again within days. Just recently I couldn't figure out why my son was acting different years after recovery. I made an emergency appointment with Dr. Goldberg. He immediately knew what was wrong, my son's Valtrex stopped working. Dr. G switched my kid to Famvir. Within a few days he got back to normal. Every child has different medical issues, but for mine the things we have done medically are essential. And unfortunately until the immune modulators come along, we need to be on these medications to be " normal. " Even when he was little, he used to bite and squeeze his sister. All the ABA that we did would not stop this behavior until we took care of the underlying yeast problem. Then, he was able to learn what was acceptable and what wasn't.
