Guest guest
I had my follow-up with Dr. this morning. He seems so wonderful, really listens to me and agrees that he doesn't know as much as he could about Thyroid problems - even though his wife is hypothyroid. When I asked him if he prescribes Armour, he replied " Yes. In fact, my wife is on it and responded so much better to that then the synthetic stuff " . I was tickled pink! My best friend / co-worker has also been recently diagnosed with low thyroid function, and she, out of the blue, decided to try a new doctor. She also picked Dr. and had no idea that was the doctor I was going to. We think it was Devine intervention or something like that. So this morning, we had an unconventional " joint appointment " . Dr. was gracious enough to sit down with one of us on each side of the desk and I showed him all the books I've read this past month (6) and the printouts from this forum and other websites. We discussed in detail how the thyroid works, alternative treatments and supplements, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, Yoga, adrenals, iron levels, cholesterol, etc and how it all tied in with thyroid function. He was in the exam room with us for an hour straight. We were both very impressed, as we had been before separately. Dr. had never heard of Reverse T3 and I showed him places in my books and printouts where it was described, and he agreed to order that test. He's going to test us for the following tests for a few months to see how it's going: TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and RT3, as well as all adrenals (DHEA, Cortisol, sex hormones), iron, and electrolytes. He's also going to check my pituitary gland function. My friend is determined to take no thyroid hormones, synthetic or otherwise, and she is taking a bunch of Chinese herbs her mother's naturopath mailed to her. She has yet to get the list of exactly what she's taking. She's going to do pilates, go on an organic sugar- free healthy diet, get her chiropractor and massage therapist involved in making sure her spine is all aligned, and take any other necessary vitamins and herbs that he herbalist thinks she should take. Now, while she may be onto something, I'm convinced she will eventually have to take some sort of replacement thyroid hormones to get her levels normal and her symptoms disappeared. I've been on the Levothyroxine for exactly one month and maybe I'm not quite so exhausted, but my memory problems, brain fog, depression, anxiety, tingling in hands and feet, joint pain, and hot flashes despite having a low body temp have not subsided one bit. I did lose 3 pounds this month doing nothing different to my diet or exercising more. I will post my lab results as soon as I get them.
