Guest guest
Auto-immune Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism at this time in this country. It is thought to occur due to stresses to the immune system, often following a viral infection such as mono or chicken pox. The antibodies basically destroy the thyroid gland. So anyone who has had hashi for some time has little hope of having thyroid function restored. Conventional medicine has no answers for Hashi patients, but some good alternative doctors have protocols for strengthening the immune system by balancing the hormones, suppressing TSH and adding missing nutrients, especially anti-oxidants. If the protocol is started early enough the progress of the disease can be halted. I have never heard of it happening that someone has gotten their thyroid function back, however, merely that they halted the destruction of their thyroid gland and other organs that might be attacked by those antibodies. The second most common cause would be environmental pollutants: insecticides, wood preservatives, PVCs, petroleum, fluoride and other halide compounds, solvents, aluminum, mercury and other heavy metals. I think this is why you find family clusters of thyroid disorders. It is not so much that they are predisposed due to heredity, but that they live in the common environment that contains the pollution. While exposure to ionizing radiation is mainly thought of as a risk factor for thryoid cancer, it is also a risk factor for hypothyroidism. l & jpickle wrote: No I dont think that is what they are talking about. I too am pretty new at this. I do think hypothyroidsm can be hereditary but not always. I know that is not the cause in my case. Opinions Please I have been reading on the heathiertalk forum and one person states that taking thyroid medication only suppresses the real problem..that the endoctirne system needs to be treated as a whole and that a good naturopath or TCM practitioner was needed.
