Alot of plastics are recycled...they are processed, melted down and formed into new plastic materials. I dont doubt that many of the old bed pans are recycled into other plastics. Stuff that holds food or is used for medical purposes is held to really high standards...I used to work in a factory that made alot of forensic science products and cryogenic tubes & DNA testing supplies and on a consumer side, we made the Nalgene water bottles amongst other things. (A good number of our science stuff can be seen on CSI and NCIS in Abbys lab!!) We were subject to ISO, FDA and BSI investigations at any time one of those fine agencies decided to darken our doors.
