Guest guest
Hi Gaylen - My kids haven't had it - unless my youngest had it during infancy (I suspected because we'd have to put him in warm water to get his bladder to empty and get him to sleep), but he wasn't on SSRIs at the time. I have times that I lose all sensation and find it hard to start going but I'm not on any SSRIs. At the worst time, I would have to set a timer to remind me to go so I didn't cough and ... well you know. lol It is more connected, for me, w/PANDAS. From what I've read but don't remember a great deal of, there are several urinary hormones associated with that too, and it seems like infections or other metabolic stuff could affect them too. Since you've already connected SSRI changes to your son's problem, I imagine you're right on target and it is the trigger ... I just wondered if there could be more to it from the bacterial side. Was the infection definitely from the retention ... or could it have triggered it? And does he have high ASO? Is he otherwise doing great on this SSRI, or have all of them given him the same problem? I hope it doesn't end up being the med and he would have to come off of them. Best of luck --- Googahly@... wrote: > Hi Everyone, > > A week or so ago, I recall reading a message or two > about bladder problems > when starting or upping SSRIs. Guest guest
We were one of them that had problems with urination when we first started. I say first started as if it only lasted a week or two but in reality, it wasn't until we reached 1 1/4 pill of zoloft that it stopped, which was months before we got there. But he didn't have a problem with retention, he had a problem with knowing when he needed to go to the bathroom before he peed in his pants. Now he doesn't pee in his pants but it was a hard 5 or 6 months for a while. I'm sure that none of this is any help to you, though. We never had a bladder infection that I'm aware of so I can't help there, either. Guest guest
Hi Gaylen, Our son, has on and off " frequent urination " , I notice it more when he's coming down with something. It has gotten better over the years, but has not completely gone away. No bladder infections when tested. Please let us know what the Urologist says. Guest guest
One thing I have noticed in my daughter is that when her yeast seems high she has excessive urination. It is also a problem every time she has a die off from anti fungals. We have had her potty trained for 2 years now and she was not having any problems even at night. She was put on an antibiotic and in a month or so she began bed wetting. Changed her anti fungal and she wet herself during the day until she was through die off. We got things under control for a while and then she started a new anti fungal and she is wetting the bed nightly, she has problems controlling her urine during the day but now that die off seems to be fading things seem to be going back to normal. I would say that for my child it is a yeast thing. Guest guest
Our son did have frequent urination for the first week or two upon introduction to the SSRI. We see it start up everytime an increase is done as well. Aside from noticing this, because our son is extremely ocd he tends to hold his bladder until he really really has to go. We see him bolt to the bathroom since he waits to long to go because he doesn't want to stop with whatever he is obsessing on. >From: Googahly@... >Date: 2008/02/03 Sun PM 05:41:23 CST > >Subject: SSRIs & bladder retention > >Hi Everyone, > >A week or so ago, I recall reading a message or two about bladder problems >when starting or upping SSRIs. Guest guest
Celexa caused my son to wet the bed at night after he had been dry for years. We had questioned whether it was a med he was on, but were able to confirm it when we switched to prozac. No more bed-wetting. (We were on celexa for 2 yrs and we just put " night pants " on him) In retrospect, he often would have to " run " to the bathroom at times, as if he had waited until too late. Maybe it IS that they lose the sensation to go when on certain SSRI's. HTH, Ellen SSRIs & bladder retention Hi Everyone, A week or so ago, I recall reading a message or two about bladder problems when starting or upping SSRIs. This had been a common issue with my son but seemed to get better a few weeks into the med or new dose. Unfortunately, with the last increase, he appears to have now lost almost all sensation in his bladder and isn't going to the bathroom unless reminded to do so. He developed a bladder infection so the pediatrician had him go through some testing and we plan to see a urologist next week. The testing showed that he has no renal problems except that his bladder is mis-shapen (something they see in extreme cases of retention) and he is unable to fully empty his bladder. From reading online, I've found that this is a side effect of all SSRIs. I also found e-mails from a few people that said the problem went away a week or so after discontinuing the drug or switching to another SSRI. Have any of your children had this problem?
